IIRC, Rush was also initially on the opposite side, that is, on the administration's side, of the Mier nomination and the amnesty bills.

I do recall right after the 2006 Congressional defeats that Rush, several times, stated that he was 'no longer carrying the water' for the GOP.

Ironically, as one who wasn't a McCainiac, he sure seems to be carrying water for McCain. Understandably, because of the alternative. But McCain. Gee, what a choice. What a choice. Can't we just vote to have a do-over?
