The Summary Of Today's Events
Posted by: Hugh Hewitt at 8:59 PM

The financial crisis continues and Congress is deadlocked.

John McCain leads by suspending campaign, postponing the debate, and urging the president to call a key leaders summit, to include himself and Barack Obama.

Obama refuses McCain's call, demands the debate go forward, and sputters about being available if he's needed.

President Bush convenes the meeting that John McCain suggested.

Obama blinks and agrees to attend.

The president addresses the nation, explains the history of the cris, and describes an outline of the proposed action. "It should be enacted as soon as possible," is the president's bottom line. "In times of real trial, elected officials rise to the occasion," the president noted. That's where we are tonight. Let's hope he is right. The Congress needs to act soon.

These events should impact the presidential election in a profound way.

Today was Obama's Katrina moment and an example of great leadership by John McCain. This contrast was telling and will matter.

Obama's complaint about the debate postponement made him look exceptionally petty given his refusal to debate all summer long. Obama's reversal suggests he did not understand the seriousness of the moment and was pursuing a purely political approach to the crisis.

John McCain, by contrast, acted with speed and resolution. McCain did not wait to see which way the polls were trending and he did what he has often done over the years --demanding what he saw was necessary action and appealing for bipartisan support. I have opposed some of these calls in the past, but today's call was clearly the right thing to do.

What an extraordinary demonstration of the differences between these two nominees.

Partisans will see what they want to see in this move by McCain, but no reasonable independent voter can say McCain "did nothing."

All this happened pretty quickly — over the course of just a few hours — My hope is that the truth will be established before Obama’s campaign tries to rewrite history through baldfaced lies.

good move by McCain...

Does anybody question why Congress is limited by the end of this session of congress to address this financial crisis?

I mean can’t these scoundrels work a week or two overtime in this urgent situation?????

What is so important about a senator or representative’s vacation at times like these?

Am I missing something here???

The only problem now is weathering the gigantic and concerted media whitewashing of Obama’s pettiness and indecision concerning this situation that we all know is coming.

We need to constantly remind voters at EVERY opportunity that the MSM’s Chosen One was more concerned with campaigning and giving speeches than actually doing the job he was elected to do by going to Congress to try to figure out a solution to the biggest economic crisis this nation has seen in over 60 years. If we fail in doing this the media will succeed in rewriting history and convincing those who don’t pay much attention, of which there are many, that Obama showed real leadership in this matter.

The media cover up of Obama’s complete disregard of not only his current job, but also of the seriousness of the situation, is going to be unprecedented. DO NOT let them get away with it.

I thought that was Michael Bolton.

I'd sooner listen to Michael Bolton on a full turnpike ride across Pennsylvania than a minute of that stuttering clod Obama.

Well, from reading on some of the Hillary forums, the PUMAs absolutely LOVED it. The most common refrain was, “Country First!”

I think the media is not going to be able to spin this in Obama’s favor, especially after the President effectively ordered his butt back to D.C.

I really wish they would just stay on vacation!

I love those sites and the women there....right now.
Of course, I will want to crash their servers should Hillary wind up being on the ticket.

There are two issues that I know of which are driving the calls for quick actions:

1. they are concerned that investors will lose confidence in our financial markets, and that investors will sell off stocks, driving the market down, and in the process, pull cash out of the market, which impacts the liquidity of the market and the whole banking system. They want quick action to nip things in the bud.

2. Election Day is only five weeks away, and in election years, Congress likes to adjourn in late Sept.- early October so members of Congress have time to go home and campaign for re-election.

What blows me away is how the McCain/Palin campaign has failed to explode with vigor on this issue, pointing out, as I understand it: I know that some of the McCain-Palin team have lobbied for groups involved, but I think it's nothing like the connections Obama has to these folks. How about an ad like this...

"You, the American taxpayer, are being asked to help keep our economy in strong shape by bailing out some institutions that have failed our trust, and failed our fellow citizens.

"You have a right to ask what role Barack Obama and I, as Senators, have done to try to prevent the situation that arose. "I can't speak for Senator Obama, but in 2005, I anticipated this crisis and co-sponsored a bill to prevent it. Here is some of what I said back in May 2005:
For years I have been concerned about the regulatory structure that governs Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac–known as Government-sponsored entities or GSEs–and the sheer magnitude of these companies and the role they play in the housing market. [...] OFHEO’s report solidifies my view that the GSEs need to be reformed without delay.

I join as a cosponsor of the Federal Housing Enterprise Regulatory Reform Act of 2005, S. 190, to underscore my support for quick passage of GSE regulatory reform legislation. If Congress does not act, American taxpayers will continue to be exposed to the enormous risk that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac pose to the housing market, the overall financial system, and the economy as a whole.
"This bill was sent to committee, where it died.

"Many of you know that Sen. Obama accepted campaign contributions from these organizations and even had their former CEOs act as advisors to him. You might not also realize that the chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Chris Dodd, is the only senator who received more contributions than Senator Obama.

"I'm not happy that my predictions have come true, but now that they have, we must act. I will be calling upon my fellow senators to do now what should have been done already--fix the system to prevent abuse--and to help to stabilize our economic future via sound economic policy.

"I'm John McCain; I approve of fiscal responsibility, and I approved this message...."

Congress is getting ready to adjourn because it’s an election year, and they normally adjourn at least a month before election day in election years, to give congressmen time to go home and campaign for re-election.
