Conservatives: 'Take a breath' before passing bailout

House conservatives urged Congress on Tuesday to "take a breath" and consider other alternatives before rushing to pass a $700 billion plan to bail out Wall Street, a measure the White House says must pass by the end of the week.

"I must tell you, there are those in the public debate who have said that we must act now. The last time I heard that, I was on a used-car lot," said Rep. Mike Pence, R-Indiana. "The truth is, every time somebody tells you that you've got to do the deal right now, it usually means they're going to get the better part of the deal."

Yep. If someone tells you a deal is good only now, they're scamming you. If its really good, it will be valid tomorrow, next week, or a year from now! This bailout sucks wind and I got a laugh out of Bush's assertion, "I'm a strong believer in free enterprise." Well if you are Mr. President, why do we need to pour $700 billion of taxpayers money into Wall Street and no one knows if it will fix what's wrong with the economy? I call that a sucker's bet!

Sounds very much like the Global Warming/Climate Change pitch.

Better proceed very carefully.

Take a breath? Before giving one man $700 B tax dollars and immunity from oversight?

C'mon, Uncle Joe Stalin loves this bailout.

AMEN BROTHER!!!!! LET ME STATE IT AGAIN... AMEN BROTHER.

Someone in Congress actually has a few brain cells left to develop a coherent thought. And I thought all politicians were a-holes. Revise that... just 98 percent of them.

freddie/fannie wasn’t “free enterprise.” So now we have to pay the price.

It’s a very bad deal. The Dems are trying to load on a bunch of pork. To bail out poor people by forgiving loans and interest, to fund pet projects, to restructure bad loans with lower interest, etc. And who pays for this extra pork? Us, the taxpayers. Let’s pressure the government to take it’s time, think through what is good and needs to be done, and find what’s bad and eliminate it from any deals. Let’s not make our children suffer additional burdensome taxes the rest of their lives.

I know what you mean. I think most on this thread won't though.

C'mon, Uncle Joe Stalin loves this bailout.

I'll tell yu what Stalin would like.

Uncle Joe would love government-coerced sub prime CRA loans with private banks being force to pay their delinquency.

Mike Pence is a friend of John McCain’s, so I truly do hope that McCain is fully paying attention to Mike Pence on this issue as well as on all other issues.

that’s because we are so used to keeping the socialist stuff on one side and capitalist stuff on the other.

What we have is a hybrid that’s like a virus. It’s able to grow and grow, unchecked, until it dominated the market. It infected the entire capitalist system. So how do we take it out?

To bail out poor people by forgiving loans and interest

if it was just a welfare program, it wouldn’t be as bad. There would be a limit to how aggressive the bureaucrats would act to pursue such loans.

But freddie/fannie made it profitable so there was a major incentive to just keep pursuing more and more high risk loans without paying any price of failure.
