HEKR JANIN: Syria has deployed military forces along its northern Lebanon border and Beirut officials now fear an incursion is imminent, according to a report in The Times.

Damascus has insisted its forces are involved in an anti-smuggling operation along the border, yet the Lebanese Government is braced for the first incursion since Syrian forces pulled out three years ago.

Beirut believes the unusual scale of the operation is connected to tensions between the two countries over recent sectarian clashes in northern Lebanon.

"People around here are worried. We don't know why the Syrians have arrived like this," said 18-year-old Ali, a farmer in the tiny hillside hamlet of Hekr Janin overlooking the border, told The Times.

Lebanese media report that 8000 to 10,000 Syrian special forces have taken up positions along some of the hills overlooking the Kabir river on the border.

In 2008 Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year) begins at sundown on Monday September 29 and ends at nightfall on Wednesday October 1.

I think this might have more to do with it than Lebanon except as a route to take.

Syria needs to experience the wrath of the “crusaders” if their army crosses the border into Lebanon...

10’s of thousands of them should be incinerated in place...

Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, India, North Korea, Venezuela, Colombia, Bolivia. The whole world has reached critical mass and the slightest nudge will start a world war.

My mind is bursting from info overload right now.

The domestic crises is enough, but when I read about world events I can’t help but shudder.

At this point, that would be like the Russians trying to attack Pakistan or Iran by taking short cut through Afghanistan. The Syrians are not popular with most Lebanese, and the Lebanese are pretty well armed. Even Hezbollah might taken offense, if the Iranians aren't party to the affair, which of course they probably would be.

There will a great synergy of stink in the next month. We have the energy and financial crises, and the terrorist nut jobs are going to do everything they can to influence this election. Expect a terrorist surge between now and November. The Leftists think their time is now, and many within our own government are hard leftists, including the Democratic Presidential Candidate.

This is gonna be a rough ride...but you can't say it's boring.

Been thinking about it, but it's so dang HOT over your way. Where's the best place to live in Tejas, for a retiree?

Probably the Hill Country (where I live). Big area, with different lakes and micro-climates. If you go to the NW quadrant of the HC, you have cooler nights which go a long way in offsetting the 100o degree days.

The key is to find a big delta in night vs. day temps in summer. Look for a place that has 50-65o night temps, this moderates the microclimate to be bearable. Here in Austin, in summer, our wake-up (6am) temps are lots of times in the 80s, and zoom to 100 within a few hours.

We do have A/C units in TX, though :)

Just make sure you’re off the coast a ways and not close to Houston.

My thought is if there is something brewing more than a show of force, that they would work with Hezbollah to sweep into Northern Israel and flank the Golan.

Sounds a lot like where I live in SE Tucson. It reached 100 today, but now it's only 82, which is very comfortable due to the low humidity. Not using the AC, just my old-fashioned window fan.

It's still not a bad place to live, even though our city council and county commission are trying to turn us into San Francisco. Lots of north easterners and left coasters moving here, to escape the mess they have made, and they vote for the same things they escaped. They never learn.

If I have to move to Tejas, I will bring my bitterly-clinging guns and religion with me, if y'all don't mind.

The US is clearly distracted. Israel is between governments, perhaps for months. This would be the time to apply pressure, though actually moving into Lebanon might be a risky venture.
