Obama rebuffs McCain's call to delay debate

NEW YORK (AP) — The economic crisis and raw politics threatened to derail the first presidential debate as John McCain challenged Barack Obama to delay Friday's event to work on the financial crisis. Obama rebuffed the plea, saying presidents need to "deal with more than one thing at once."

The White House rivals maneuvered Wednesday to claim the leadership role in resolving the economic turmoil that has overshadowed their campaign. Obama said he would continue preparing for the debate and consulting with bailout negotiators and Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. McCain said he would stop all campaigning and return to Washington on Thursday to work toward a bipartisan solution.

"This is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess," Obama said in Clearwater, Fla. "It's going to be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once."

But McCain said they must focus on a bipartisan solution as the Bush administration's $700 billion bailout proposal seemed headed for defeat. If not, McCain said ominously that credit will dry up, jeopardizing home sales, individual savings and company payrolls.

"I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time," McCain said.

Both candidates accepted President Bush's invitation to attend a White House meeting Thursday afternoon with congressional leaders in hopes of agreeing on a rescue plan. McCain had spoken with Bush earlier Wednesday and requested such a meeting.

In a joint statement Wednesday night, the candidates said the country faces "a moment of economic crisis" and they called for political unity to solve it because "the jobs, savings and the prosperity of the American people are at

Obama thinks he gets to move into the white house in early November! And why not? He is already conducting foreign policy as the presumptive next POTUS of all 57 states.

I agree, they are padding the polls to make it look like a real horse race. They are doing this while hoping something will come up to disqualify Mc/Palin in some way, I mean really....30 investigators in Alaska digging through Palins garbage. That tells me everything I need to know. People put to much stock in the media, polls ect.

Well ... in the modern age, I suppose there isn’t really any need to wait for the word of the winner to prpagate through the various States of the Union.

Of course, we don’t really know how far away states 51 - 57 are — maybe they are in other solar systems and it might still take a few months for word to reach them ?

ZERO cannot even give a speech without his security blanket the teleprompter. If he does he is all hmmms, ahhs and other non words.

I think McCain is messing with his head on the debate — ZERO does not have the ability to think on his feet but McCain does. ZERO is toast!

One of the funniest things I have seen. Bush calls him at 7:30 tonight and Obama is going. I have been laughing the rest of the evening about that!

I understand that Obama requested 4 teleprompters. How the hell do you use a teleprompter at a debate where answers are to be spontaneous?

Obama is going to regret his foolishness. As dimwitted as Odumbo is, he should take any chance he can get to avoid letting McCain make a fool of him.

McCain should publicly FLAT refuse to participate in debates where the candidates can have teleprompters.

They should have been prepared for McCain to fly into Obambi's OODA loop.

Obama is stuck in Observe and Orient while McCain has used his political experience to jump to Action. Whether it works as planned it has certainly thrown Obama off his game once again.

The poll numbers were beginning to hit McCain so some bold action was necessary. If he pulls it off Obama will spend another week playing catch-up. If not, McCain may have at least slowed the hemorrhaging. The longer this problem monopolized the news cycle, the worse McCain's numbers would look.

People put to much stock in the media, polls ect.

The squishy undecided, Independent voters will pay enough attention to the media and the polls to swing the vote in a close election. They are political agnostics who may or may not go to the polls and vote. If they do go, they will typically want to go with the flow and vote for the one they think will win so they can say, "yea, I voted for him too".

The media can only cover up so much. McCain just has to keep making Obama look as dumb and inexperienced as he is. So far, Obama has run a very poor campaign and McCain has made very few mistakes. McCain is playing rope-a-dope while Obama and his media buddies keep leaving themselves open to the punches.

Exactly.

Last I understood both Mr. McCain and Mr. Obama are SITTING Senators from their respective states. No one if forcing them from not doing their jobs while campaigning and I for one am pleased to see McCain is still willing to do what he is currently elected to do.

Further, Obama’s been shadow boxing to avoid the debates for months and now he’s all high and mighty about a debate when all US Senators and Reps need to be “present” pardon the pun for this historic discussion and vote. What a disgrace to our country by his actions.

Obama’s been upstaged by an experienced statesman who wants to focus on a disaster for America instead of personal ambition. Obama doesn’t know how to put his ego or his ambition on hold.

In Oakland ghetto town, they were writing no money down loans, stated income loans, loans with big balloons, and lots of adjustable rate mortgages.

Anybody could have gotten a loan. I was tempted. But hubby was not.
