We have only 9mm in the house because my wife has the same problem. You can get a .40 or .45 that’s been fine-tuned so that the slide is easier to pull back, but for off-the-shelf, a 9mm is OK. A good revolver is also an option.

storage can be a problem

A 1000-round case of .223 takes up little more space than a shoebox. Storage isn't a problem. Space is no excuse.

I like my SA/DA Taurus with the decocker. First shot is DA after being decocked. That makes your first shot more intentional. The SA trigger pull is much lighter for when you’ve already decided the first shot was a good idea.

I’m also tempted to get an over/under shotgun for home defense but will have to do some research.

Ammoman

For the record I have no relationship with this person other than as a highly satisfied customer.

Thane,

I too live in the western burbs of Chicago. If you don't already have one your first purchase should be a good quality pump action 12 gauge shotgun. Mossberg makes an excellent one (500 or 590 models) for very reasonable prices. Get 200 rounds of 00 or 000 buckshot as well.

You can't go wrong with a nice used revolver in .357 magnum either. 500 rounds of .38 spl ammo (.357 revolvers chamber both .38 spl and .357 mag) is a nice round number.

Finally a good quality bolt action rifle in .308 with a 4 power scope. Savage makes a very nice one for about 500 bucks I believe.

If you just have to have a semi auto and don't have a thousand dollars laying around, pick up an AK variant for less than 400 and a 1000 round pack of soft point ammo (NOT FMJ) for about 200 bucks from Ammoman. I posted the link above.

This package should be more than enough to dissuade any rioters who happen through your AO.

I hope you find my advice useful.

Best,

L

This is Chicago. If I go the full auto route, I’d probably just pick up a Chicago Typewriter.

Being a lady I don’t have the strength in my fingers to pull the .45 action back.

Don't try to 'pull' the slide back. Use this method.

Grasp the pistol grip firmly in your right hand. Place your left hand on top of the slide. Now push firmly with your right hand while keeping the slide in place with your left.

I think you'll find it's much easier this way.

Best,

L

See Post #46. A good pump shotgun is cheap and reliable. Mossberg, Remington and a few others are good and hold many more rounds than an O/U. #1 buckshot is probably better for home defense. It has 30% more surface area/round than 00 buck, it penetrates well enough (6-8”) to stop an intruder, and is less likely to go through walls and hit someone in the next room or house.

“...I’m also tempted to get an over/under shotgun for home defense but will have to do some research...”

Over/Under is NOT a good choice for home defense (it’s better than NOTHING, but - why settle for two shots?)

Get a Mossberg 500 or 590 or Remington 870 (or any other reliable pump gun) with an 18 inch barrel, side saddle it with a 6-round shell holder, and you’ll have 12 rounds available - six in the tube, six on the side. Home defense MIGHT require more than two rounds, especially against multiple intruders - especially if you live in an area that might be prone to riots when Oblabma loses.

Over/under is fine for ducks; less so for preserving your life, liberty, and property.

Suggest a decent handun as well. Something no smaller than 9mm minimum, preferrably .45 caliber. You mentioned you were an older lady having trouble with a .45 slide? Look into the Taurus Judge - it’s a revolver, and will take BOTH .45 Long Colt AND .410ga shotgun shells. It’s point and click, no slide to worry about. Might be the perfect choice for you.

Stay safe.

Bought my first AR this year. Thinking of buying a reciever. A friend of mine bought an M-4 variant and the State cop doing the NICS said “Man, there sure are a lot of those being bought.”

Millions of legal gunowners will become criminals overnight...

Technically, I think we're covered by the Constitution's prohibition on ex post facto laws. Realistically, that means we're at the mercy of the good folks in Congress. ((((shudder)))

The numbers ranged from 7 (a 1911 shooter) to 200.

Sounds about right. Most forward-thinking folks I know have anywhere from 7-200 thousand rounds on hand. :)

4. Go to the range more often.

Always sound advice.

I recently purchased a dedicated .22LR upper assembly for my AR so I could get more trigger time on the cheap. Having the same trigger pull, sights, weight, etc., as with the centerfire configuration makes for an effective practice tool.

It's got the correct bore diameter and rifling twist for the rimfire, so accuracy is quite good.

Been thinking about buying my first firearm myself. Live in Chicago’s western suburbs, and the South Side is going to be a burning disaster area if Obama loses. I’m worried it might spill over into the suburbs.

What do you all recommend?

WASR-10 or your basic Mossberg Maverick.

It’s a perfect ladies gun. Check out my profile page. My Daughter in Law went from her Kimber[in the picture] to using my FN High Power and her hits increased. It’s much easier to pull back the slide on the 9MM. I changed the grips so it didn’t feel so blocky.

You have my condolences. I used to live in Oak Park. On the other hand I was raised in Stickney so the childhood was wonderful.
