WASHINGTON -- The crisis in the financial markets and increasing anxiety about the economy is playing to Sen. Barack Obama's political strengths, but it has not given him a substantial lead in the presidential contest, a new Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll shows.
Amid turmoil in the nation's financial sector that threatens to harm the broader economy, more voters say they believe Obama is best equipped to handle domestic issues, such as the economy and healthcare, than his Republican rival, Sen. John McCain.
Nonetheless, the contest remains close: In a head-to-head choice, Obama is supported by 49% of likely voters and McCain by 45%.
Obama's lead shrinks to 46% to 44% if all registered voters are counted -- not very different than the result of a Times/Bloomberg poll in August, which also showed Obama holding a 2-point margin. The earlier poll was taken before the two widely viewed political conventions and the latest turmoil on Wall Street.

Interesting that they peg a bigger lead among likely voters for Obama. I can only guess that the “base” is becoming demoralized again.
Odumbo is looking pretty bad now with his campaign first stance
Chet, this paper has no credibility with polling.
They had Arnold getting his butt kicked in the 2003 recall election.
The LA Slimes, don’t make us laugh!!
"Just came for Drudge and he has a picture of the smug black messiah making a fist like the black panthers! I still dont believe this, NO WAY NO HOW....Im getting a little nervous but GOD will help us win this battle. The Tsunami of evil spewed by the RATS and their accomplices is beyond anything I have EVER witnessed. I serve a God who deals with the impossible, I serve a MIGHTY God who deals severely with evil doers. I serve a God who listens to the cries of his people. I serve a KING who has the power to turn the hearts of people to do the right thing. I serve a MASTER who turns situations around... what satan meant for evil HE will turn it around for good. I have to believe I serve a MIGHTY GOD! Fix your eyes on Him dont look at the situation, but put your faith in him. IF ever we needed Him most its now. Call upon him and he will answer. Im NOT willing to surrender my COUNTRY over to Satans cronies yet! The SPIRITUAL fight has just began. Please, I implore you, FAST AND PRAY. This is the only way we can defeat the demons and their plans. PLEASE, PLEASE..God Doesn't need an army of millions but a handful of faithful believers who are willing to take a stand in the middle of the Storm by faith believing without wavering that God can do all things! Even this to turn an election to favor McPAL! Join me with prayer and fasting."
I agree. Hussein is a lightweight, no matter what the media does to prop him up.
No better than a South American Banana Republic President.
ONWARD TO VICTORY!
Barack Obama will truly screw up the entire country on all of the issues! There are way too many stupid voters throughout the U.S., and it truly continues to get even worse! The “dumbing down” of the entire U.S. truly continues.
I am beginning to believe the Left has mastered the art of wedging the conservatives out of the Republican party.
In 2006, immigration was thrust upon the party as an emergency and conservatives said we would have to accept a Democratic party controlled Congress in order to teach Republicans a lesson about the border issue.
Now in 2008, financial bailout means we need to stand by our principals and let Barack Obama win. The principals are more important. It seems clear that Democrats would like the crisis to ensue from the failure of a bailout. The media will amplify blame onto the Bush heir apparent. Conservatives will help it stick by identifying Bush as a traitor.
I am skeptical about this recurring argument from conservatives.
It will be interesting to see what President Bush says tonight.
What are people supposed to do if they really don’t like Democrats running the country? Is there some political interest group we can productively join?
Doesn’t compute. “Likely” voters are ALWAYS more “Republican” than “registered.”
In my recent analysis of polling accuracy for the 2004 election, the LA Times came in dead last. They were even worse than Gallup.
Here is the clincher that everyone should read buried in the article:
“McCain has done a better job wooing independent voters than he did last month. Among registered voters who describe themselves as independent, 34% supported Obama and 49% supported McCain.
That is a big swing from August, when Obama led among independents 46% to 35%. That is, in part, because that fluid category of voters this month included a larger portion of white men without college degrees, a group Obama has a hard time wooing.”
There is no way that the LAT poll is accurate if this internal fact is true. Independents support McCain 46 to 35 when just one month ago it was the exact opposite. How in the world can McCain be behind except that the pollsters are mixing it up with party ID.
I think if we can get Juan to mention Cuomo a couple of more times then the Times will be close to right on their polls. Juan is like a Biden sometimes..He sure did not need Cuomo this week.
