'Green energy will create 20m jobs'
Sydney Herald Sun ^ | September 25, 2008

DEVELOPMENT of alternative energy should create more than 20 million jobs around the world in coming decades as governments adopt policies to address the depletion of resources, according to a UN report.

Some 2.3 million people around the world already work in alternative energy jobs with half of them in biofuels, said the report.

Speedy creation of the jobs will depend on countries implementing and broadening policies including capping emissions of greenhouse gases, and the shifting of subsidies from the oil and natural gas sector, to new energy including wind, solar and geothermal power, it said.

"If we do not transform to a low-carbon economy we will miss a major opportunity for the fast tracking of millions of new jobs," Achim Steiner, UNEP director, told reporters.

He said movement toward the jobs will occur even if the world does not come to a new agreement by the end of next year on stabilising and then cutting greenhouse gases because global population is headed toward 8 billion or 9 billion by 2050, while new resources like metals, oil and gas are becoming more expensive to find.

But if the world waits 10 years to take serious action on greenhouse gases the costs for moving to a green economy will be much higher, he said.

Since most of africa does not even have a job, I recommend you start there. I understand AMX has a contest for deciding what to do their and the leader has suggested solar lanterns.

If jobs are all they are concerned about, and using “green energy,” ban bulldozers and return to shovels.

Depending on your degree of cynicism, that is either a weak attempt at wealth distribution, or a token gesture at a new form of World Welfare.

We can continue to assume that the US Taxpayer would be funding most of that...

You don’t understand what green jobs mean. Green jobs are government jobs or private sector jobs that are created as a result of governmental environmental regulation.

For instance, the Seattle city council has mandated that people start separating their food scraps from the trash and put out a separate trash can for food waste. The plan is to collect the food waste and compost it. They will charge the people to collect the garbage, but then the company that runs the compost site will sell the compost back to homeowners. The job of collecting the garbage and running the compost site is a “green job”.

Other types of green jobs are inspectors - the state decided that homeowners with modern style septic mounds must have them inspected every year at a cost of $350.00.

Then their are the training jobs. The local county councils set up trainers to instruct citizens on how to spot environmental violators, who then drive around the county and report the violations. Then the inspectors come around and either levy a fine or offers a re-education course that costs the person much more than the fine and requires immediate changes to comply with the regulations. It’s a win/win for the government because even if you opt for the fine, they will come back and force the changes.

Green jobs are the equivalent of an environmental police state. The Green job holders are the police.

First, we need to relax nevironmental regulations and limit the opportunities for appeal. In my county, leftists greenies and NIMBYs have taken down geothermal development, are agressively promoting removal of a 4 dam hydroelectric complex and are protesting a cogeneration (wood chip) plant. Wind is out because we are on the pacific flyway and have populations of bald eagles and endangered falcons.

The people have got to put their foot down on this nonsense.

I’m picturing 20 million people ‘drafted’ to work on a treadmill generating electricity. For the amount of power generated by some of these ‘alternate’ means, it just might be cost-effective.

Green jobs = Environmental Fascism

It’s that simple, but no one is paying attention because they have all been brainwashed by the public school system and the media.

If that's the way green jobs are defined, then that's all well and good. Either way, I never used the term. I said creating jobs, and uses “green energy” instead of “nonrenewables” like oil. My argument still holds and is no less tyrannical than some of the others you mention.

broadening policies including capping emissions of greenhouse gases, and the shifting of subsidies

Isn't it ALWAYS about "broadening policies" and the "shifting of subsidies" with the One Worlders?

Yep. I just call it tyranny, myself.
