Last week really ought to have been the end of the McCain campaign. With the whole country feeling (and its financial class acting) as if we lived in a sweltering, bankrupt banana republic, and with this misery added to the generally Belarusian atmosphere that surrounds any American trying to board a train, catch a plane, fill a prescription, or get a public servant or private practitioner on the phone, it was surely the moment for the supposedly reform candidate to assume a commanding position. And the Republican nominee virtually volunteered to assist that outcome by making an idiot of himself several times over, moving from bovine and Panglossian serenity about the state of the many, many crippled markets to sudden bursts of pointless hyperactivity such as the irrelevant demand to sack the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.
And yet, and unless I am about to miss some delayed "groundswell" or mood shift, none of this has translated into any measurable advantage for the Democrat. There are three possible reasons for such a huge failure on Barack Obama's part. The first, and the most widely canvassed, is that he is too nice, too innocent, too honest, and too decent to get down in the arena and trade bloody thrusts with the right-wing enemy. (This is rapidly becoming the story line that will achieve mythic status, along with allegations of racial and religious rumor-mongering, if he actually loses in November.) The second is that crisis and difficulty, at home and abroad, sometimes make electors slightly more likely to trust the existing establishment, or some version of it, than any challenger or newcomer, however slight. The third is that Obama does not, and perhaps even cannot, represent "change" for the very simple reason that the Democrats are a status quo party.

Mike Dukakis is a humorless dolt; but compared to Mr. Obama, he looks like Winston Chruchill.
The more honest question would be a variation of the above;
Why is Obama appearing to be vapid, hesitant, and gutless, when I've been lead to expect him to be brilliant, decisive, and bold.
Hitchens is smarter than this. He knows that Obama is a dead myth walking; a media forged Frankenstein of special interests nuts and teleprompter bolts. He cannot be more than he is. He doesn't want to be anything more than the erudite philosopher. If McCain doesn't defeat him, the next 4 years will be an awkward, failure-laden replay of Obama's bowling experience, on a global scale.
Someone needs to start a fund to bring Peter Hitchens back to the US. He’s the sober, sweet smelling, actual Conservative Hitchens.

I’m sure he’s quite confident when he’s uttering leftist shibboleths to the like-minded. For the campaign, he has speak like a moderate, which for him is like speaking Martian. His universal translator can only work so fast.

I posted a similar response last night. Obama is a product of his own making. He has avoided any difficult decisions his whole life. He became editor of the Harvard Law Review but never published so much as single letter. He joined the “right” church to begin his political career. The he went to the “right” people, ie Bill Ayers, to start his run for office, then when he got in, he went along with the incredibly corrupt Chicago ‘Rat political machine and voted “present” more than any politician in history. He ran for Senate by suing to get his opponent’s private divorce records opened to the public. And once in the Senate he allowed others to introduce legislation that he supported or didn’t support based on what his party said. In running for president, he threw numerous friends and acquaintances under the bus rather than try to defend them.
Obama is like electricity. He always looks for the path of least resistance to get where he wants to go.

As a typical white woman, I find Obama to be completely stupid neoMarxist dullard and I could give a fig about his race.
I’m not voting for him because he’s black but because he is MORTALLY STUPID.
Gutless, maybe, but what does Hitchens expect? Hardcore partisans want their candidates to go negative, but swing voters in the middle don't like it that much. My experience is that Obama turns off the people that he needs to win when he goes on the attack.
