I have been using the online phone bank. It’s great. I don’t think the script is very good though so I’ve been using my own script and trying to prepare answers to potential questions people might have. I mainly use the script for answering machines but will sometimes dive right into it if I have an opening. Otherwise I may ask what issue concerns them the most first and then explain why McCain is better on it. Here are some of the things I’ve been saying or have in my notes...
Standard stump script:
Hi my name is [NAME], and I’m a volunteer calling for the John McCain/Sarah Palin campaign.
I believe they have the only REAL plan to bring reform and change to Washington. They will produce oil and alternative energy here in the U.S., which will create new jobs, lower gas prices, and stop us from sending $700 billion a year to the Middle East. They will cut wasteful government spending which McCain has been trying to do in the Senate for years. They will improve our financial markets with strong oversight. And they let our military fight terrorism overseas so that terrorists won’t have free reign to hit us at home again.
Please consider that Democrats have controlled Congress for 2 years and less than 15% of people approve of the job Congress is doing. Barack Obama voted with Democrats 96% of the time and if he is elected the Democratic Congress now led by speaker Nancy Pelosi from San Francisco will be able to pass the most extreme parts of their agenda into law, including universal taxpayer-funded abortion and a 400% increase in welfare spending, according to the Wall Street Journal.
John McCain has served this country for decades. In a time when big money and special interest groups rule Washington D.C., we can trust John McCain to ignore them, to stick up for the common man and woman, and to always put his country first. This call was paid for by McCain/Palin 2008 at 703-418-2008.

Joe Biden said this week that he is sure the next president will be tested within the first 6 months by an international crisis. He says there are 4 or 5 serious foreign policy problems that are on the brink right now. McCain is a war hero who knows how to run the military and has been right on foreign policy issues for decades, including his early support for a troop surge in Iraq which has now completely stabilized the country. In a dangerous world, McCain’s experience would be an incredible asset to the country.
We learn more every day about the questionable, un-American people Barack Obama has worked with throughout his career and his extremist policies, such as expanding welfare by over $600 billion in his first year and requiring taxpayers to fund a policy of unrestricted abortion on demand. Democrats led by Nancy Pelosi from San Francisco and Howard Dean have controlled Congress for the last 2 years and will be able to pass their most extreme agenda easily if Obama becomes president.
Barack Obama took his children to a church that preached hate against America for 20 years and only left when the facts came out and started to hurt him in the polls. Obama’s early Chicago campaigns were partly paid for by former domestic terrorist William Ayers, a man who still says he supports a communist system of government to this day. Obama and Ayers served on the boards of two foundations together, which supported efforts to teach school students radical ideology and distributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to community organizers like ACORN, a group that has faced multiple investigations for promoting election fraud.
On Obama’s economics plan, the Tax Policy Center estimates that welfare payments from the federal government will expand to 4 times their current size, expanding to $647 billion in the first year and 1 trillion dollars by the 10th year. Welfare to each person would decline dramatically as their income rises above $40,000, giving people an incentive to work less so they can continue receiving government money.
Obama thinks a plumber whose business would bring in $280,000 a year is wealthy. He thinks the government can decide how to “spread that wealth around” better than the person who earned it. When a plumbing company or other small business is taxed, the owner is going to either raise his prices, lay off his employees, cut their pay, or close his business. When employees lose their jobs, even more of them will go on welfare, requiring the government to raise taxes even more to support them, which hurts businesses yet again...starting a vicious cycle of economic decline just when we need a recovery.
On the current economic crisis, the government was mostly responsible because they partially owned and regulated Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae for decades. In the ‘90s they lowered lending standards and promised banks they’d buy up and guarantee subprime loans. Community organizers including ACORN and Obama himself lobbied hard to get the standards lowered and force banks to make toxic subprime loans. McCain and 20 other Republican Senators signed a letter in 2006 demanding the regulations be changed but no Democrats supported the idea. Democrats resisted in part because they were the top recipients of campaign donations from Fannie and Freddie...Obama was the #2 recipient of their money of all-time even though he’d only been a senator 2 years.
On health care, according to a study by the independent Lewin Group, Obama’s health care plan puts almost 50 million people on a government plan. McCain’s plan adds none and actually takes 5 million off government Medicare by expanding employer-based coverage. The net savings under McCain’s plan is about $1400 per person while under Obama’s it’s only $400.
On the issue of “change...” Democrats have been in control of both houses of Congress for 2 years now and Congress’ approval rating is at a historic low of under 15%, even lower than Bush’s. Are you better off now than you were 2 years ago when Democrats took over Congress from Republicans? Democrats are guaranteed to hold Congress this year because most are not up for reelection yet. If Obama wins, Democrats will control the entire federal government and there will be almost no checks and balances on what they can do. Obama has voted with Democrats 96% of the time and studies show he is the single most liberal Senator out of all 100. McCain on the other hand has a long history of being independent-minded, criticizing Bush and other members of his party when he thought they were wrong. He knows how to work with both parties, how to negotiate and how to compromise, always putting his country’s best interest above his party’s.
On the Supreme Court. The next president is likely to appoint 3 Supreme Court Justices, possibly up to 6, to a court that already leans to the liberal side. Liberals on the court today have voted to force the U.S. military to set terrorist suspects free who have been captured on the battlefield, to let the government seize private property for its own use for virtually any reason, and to consider as free speech the distribution of “virtual,” computer-generated child pornography on the internet.
On abortion, Obama wants federal funding for abortions under his health plan. He and Democrats plan to pass legislation that will overturn every state-by-state restriction on abortion including parental notification. One group estimates abortions will increase by 120,000 a year if this happens. Obama said, “The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act”, which would abolish virtually every existing state and federal limitation on abortion. Pro-abortion groups have said the law would “sweep away hundreds of anti-abortion laws [and] policies.”
Obama has also said he would authorize the large-scale cloning of human embryos for use in biomedical research in which they would be destroyed.
On the war in Iraq, McCain was one of the first to recommend the surge in troops and pressured Bush to do it for years before Bush finally agreed. McCain’s strategy has enabled us to reduce violence and stabilize Iraq, giving our military a victory instead of a defeat that would demoralize them and make us look weak and vulnerable to our enemies around the world. If they question why we went into Iraq, remind them that none of the 9-11 hijackers came from Afghanistan, they came from Saudi Arabia and Egypt, countries much closer to Iraq. Bin Laden and his lieutenants also came from there. Going to Iraq allowed us to fight all those new Al Queda recruits before they had a chance to go to Afghanistan and train for new terror attacks. It also started a democracy in the Middle East, giving more Arabs a voice in their own country. The Arab dictatorships never allow criticism of themselves but instead publish hate speech about the U.S. and Israel,
which is a big part of what motivates their people to hate America. Democracy and free speech in a country like Iraq will help their citizens learn how to solve their own problems instead of constantly being taught that the U.S. is their problem and they can do nothing about it except attack us.
If they say Palin’s too conservative, tell them she raised taxes on oil companies, balanced the budget and refunded money to taxpayers, and she stopped the Republicans in her state from taking away same sex domestic partner benefits for state employees. Tell them the media has spread many rumors about Palin which simply aren’t true. Remind them that Obama’s church he went to for 20 years is far more radical and frightening than what Palin’s more traditional Christian beliefs are. Tell them Ronald Reagan’s adopted son Michael Reagan has praised Palin as the closest he’s ever seen a politician come to having the same qualities as his dad.
If they were a Hillary supporter, tell them there are a lot of Hillary supporters who have decided to support McCain this year both because he’s more experienced and moderate in his views than Obama and because it will give Hillary the chance to run again in 2012. If Obama wins, he will almost certainly run for a 2nd term in 2012. That would put Hillary’s chance off until 2016 when she will be 69 years old.
