Tying poor women's tubes could help taxpayers, legislator says
Worried that welfare costs are rising as the number of taxpayers declines, state Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied.
"We're on a train headed to the future and there's a bridge out," LaBruzzo said of what he suspects are dangerous demographic trends. "And nobody wants to talk about it."
LaBruzzo said he worries that people receiving government aid such as food stamps and publicly subsidized housing are reproducing at a faster rate than more affluent, better-educated people who presumably pay more tax revenue to the government. He said he is gathering statistics now.

I see nothing wrong with it. The best way for a woman to get off welfare is to stop having kids. And perhaps if the middle class didn’t have to pay so much in taxes to support the welfare class, we’d be able to afford having more kids ourselves.

The vast majority of Americans, including me, think that choosing to be sterilized is ethical but that killing an old person is unethical. I got a vasectomy after completing my family with three children. If there is nothing wrong with voluntary sterilization, then why is it wrong for the government to pay someone to be sterilized? Is your argument the slippery slope — that government paying for sterilization today will open the door to mandatory sterilization of “undesirables” tomorrow? If so, there are two ways to deal with this:
(1) Have the government offer free sterilization to everyone who wants it.
(2) Have private organizations offer free sterilization.
