Economic Fears Give Obama Clear Lead Over McCain in Poll

Turmoil in the financial industry and growing pessimism about the economy have altered the shape of the presidential race, giving Democratic nominee Barack Obama the first clear lead of the general-election campaign over Republican John McCain, according to the latest Washington Post-ABC News national poll. Just 9 percent of those surveyed rated the economy as good or excellent, the first time that number has been in single digits since the days just before the 1992 election.

Just 14 percent said the country is heading in the right direction, equaling the record low on that question in polls dating back to 1973. More voters trust Obama to deal with the economy, and he currently has a big edge as the candidate who is more in tune with the economic problems Americans now face.

He also has a double-digit advantage on handling the current problems on Wall Street, and as a result, there has been a rise in his overall support. The poll found that, among likely voters, Obama now leads McCain by 52 percent to 43 percent.

The margin may be incorrect, but the poll does underscore that Obama has pulled ahead and is starting to pull away.

....and taxing our way to prosperity to feed an already insanely obese government is the answer from the left....?

If we the people fail to learn from the lessons of the past.....we will deserve the nightmare we elect...

Fiscal responsibility is the only answer....the days of living off the government teet must end....if it does not, the social programs supporting the retiring baby boomers will crush our economic system.....

The reality is clear....yet know one wishes to face it....

“The survey includes additional interviews with randomly selected African Americans, for a total of 163 black respondents”.

...well. There’s 163 “Yes’” for BO.

Too bad for the MSM that the election isn’t won by national popular vote. I suspect we won’t hear the end of it, though, if McCain wins electorally but Obama wins the popular vote. I hope the Republicans are looking to turn out vote in states that McCain will win easily or not at all like they did in 2004.

That additional sample was rebalanced in before being compared to the other people who responded so that’s not the problem. There are also blacks opposed to Barack Obama, though it’s a lower number than the number that usually vote Republican.

Obama is ahead in every poll and on intrade (slightly), though the margin here seems very high. Do you think Michael Medved will finally stop saying “the greatest nation on God’s green earth” once Obama becomes President? Won’t that just sound laughable at that point?

There is no way the ABC/Washington Post is correct. Definitely a cooked poll compared to other yesterday of McCain up by 1, Obama by 1,3,4 and tie. Whatever this poll thinks it is trying to accomplish to help their candidate will backfire. We are all on this!! Sounds like help knowing Obamas numbers are failing....then as Fox showed this poll this morning it causes us to talk about it..trying to figure out WHY his cooked numbers are up and blaming the Economy crisis on McCain for it. Unbelievable. This time, I truly believe America is not going to buy it. Will be interesting to see more polling today. Have a feeling Obamas numbers are falling even more.....

General Election: McCain vs. Obama

Poll Date Sample Obama (D) McCain (R) Spread
RCP Average 09/17 - 09/22 — 47.9 45.1 Obama +2.8

ABC News/Wash Post 09/19 - 09/22 780 LV 52 43 Obama +9

Ipsos-McClatchy 09/18 - 09/22 923 RV 44 43 Obama +1

Gallup Tracking 09/20 - 09/22 2740 RV 47 44 Obama +3

Rasmussen Tracking 09/20 - 09/22 3000 LV 48 48 Tie

Hotline/FD Tracking 09/20 - 09/22 906 RV 47 43 Obama +4

Battleground Tracking 09/17 - 09/22 800 LV 46 48 McCain +2

Just the title of this story....and then this polling of the ONLY poll that shows Obama ahead by such numbers makes me sick to what degree the MSM will work to get their guy in. Obvious from the rest of the polling that this one is way off base. Look today and probably see O’s numbers down even more!!! That will explain why they feel the need to help their guy out. Yesterday it was McCain ahead by 1, O by 1,3,4 and NOW 9. No way!

It’s important to step back and realize that not everyone is willing to put a lot of time into political research. They’re the ‘trust your gut’ crowd. They hope they know what source to trust and vote accordingly. Fortunately, 70 % of likely voters no longer trust the drive-bys. I believe that number will increase over time. Now the challenge is to make them trust conservative voices.

The media does not report news, it supplies “narrative” to use the newspeak word. They choose this week’s crisis of the century complete with heros (dems) and villains (republicans) and push the story as the worse event seen in human history. (Wasn’t it just about 3 weeks ago that Ike was going to be Katrina 2 and be the final demise of those rascally republicans?)

This ‘story’ is just an added greek chorus to support the MSM’s preconceived notion that all problems; wars, financial, or natural, can be solved by democrats. The message is “everybody is supporting Obama. Shouldn’t you... you racist!”

Just imagine a left wing president far more to the left than John Kerry.

Oh, and talk about bad VP choices, an absolute moron to step in if anything happens to Obama.

Exactly, what American city have democrats not ruined? High taxes, crime, horrible (expensive) schools, crazy liberal racial policies, homeless on the streets.

They are well on their way to doing that everywhere. Let’s face it Obama represents the hand out society. Fails everywhere it is tried.

This is why I think Palin will help McCain. Conservatives will vote for the future and these poll suppression games will not work for Obama.

Agreed. Ignorant.
All they know is the they see this articulate black on TV 24/7 promising to solve all their problems- and the MSM declaring that Obama is their saviour. They feel ‘white guilt’...
God help us all.

Factually, per usual, there is absolutely no reason or reasoning for this financial mess to reflect on conservatives! This is hogwash.

While I was sleeping, did conservatives gain the upper hand in Congress?

How about blaming some of those of those financiers who have had their hands in the cookie jars of Wall and Broad!
