Senate Democrats issued a counterproposal to the Treasury Department's $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan Monday that would give the government a stake in firms unloading troubled assets under the plan, and limit the pay of corporate executives involved.

There would also be assistance to homeowners and localities to prevent foreclosures, and more oversight of the Treasury's actions, under the proposal released by the office of Connecticut Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.

My FRiends, we must stop this action, regardless of consequences. This is the largest power grab in the history of this nation. Government ownership of corporations IS ON THE TABLE! What happens when the government owns the corporation you work for? What happens when your paycheck is signed by the government? What happens when your company competes with the government? What will government do when it realizes it cannot compete with your company?

I will stand in the soup line, grow my own food, beg, steal or borrow to feed and clothe my family. I WILL NOT stand by quietly while my FREEDOM is encroached upon or altogether taken away!

Well said. The longer we put this off, the worse and more prolonged it will be. I would rather be poor and free than rich and enslaved.

Die on your feet or live on your knees... that’s an easy choice for me.

How predictable. Democrats are so damn used to being state employess that people who work for profit seem like monsters to them. It wouldn’t matter to the economy as a whole if individual corporations overaid their CEOs. CEO pay has nothing to do with anything.

The problem is credit. Cut them off; let them liquidate. Stop helping them; stop punishing them. The market will out.

This is the chance the LEFTIES have been waiting for - implement SOCIALISM. Put the Feds in charge of everything. I vote no and say let the bailout stall if need be (I know the precarious nature of our banking system). Americans far and wide NEED TO KNOW WHO CREATED THIS - it goes back to Carter and Clintoon.

Get the government out of business and get business out of government.

On this issue (as most others) there is almost no ddifference between republicans and democrats other than who they want to give taxpayer money to.
Both want to take money taxpayers haven’t even earned yet and give it to their cronies and supporters.

Republicans (most of them) led by George Bush want to hand over several trillion dollars to their fat cat pals.
Democrats want to hand over even more so they can also pander to the special interest groups they buy their votes from.

They will reach agreement by expanding the give-away so each can take care of their pals.

If companies want to spend some of their profits on high salaries and bonuses for their CEO’s that is their business.
But when they have no profits we do object to paying them with taxpayer monies.

We also care that they want unlimited capitalism when profits are high and want taxpayer funded socialism when losses mount.

George Bush is trying to cement his place in history as the absolute worse president America has ever had to suffer.

He, congress and their well heeled cronies that swap jobs through the revolving door will destroy America if they push this unlimited buyout through.
The most the government should do is offer loans at market rates and even that is an objectionable breakdown in the barrier between government and private business.

It seems strange to me that Paulson and Bush didn’t bolster their rhetoric by providing congressional leaders with a list of all the times congress and the American people decided to swallow their skepticism and give the Bush administration the benefit of the doubt, and then everything worked out fine.

It’s a really long list, so spelling it out in detail would surely convince a lot of people. Like remember when some folks said Bush’s math was wrong and his tax cuts would lead to large deficits? Idiots! Or those who warned that occupying Iraq might be kind of hard? Morons!

If you can’t trust George W. Bush with an unlimited grant of authority then whom can you trust?

[under the proposal released by the office of Connecticut Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee.]

This is so wrong on so many levels I just don’t even know where to begin.

Talk about the fox guarding the hen house.

Tax cuts didn’t lead to deficits. Spending like a twelve year old to buy votes did.

Incoming revenues increased, congress critters spent that and more.

"and limit the pay of corporate executives involved"

Humm, therein lies the seed of a good idea.

Congress played a large part in all of this, let's have an amendment limiting the pay of congresscritters to, humm, $17k. No perks, certainly no free parking spots, and pension is limited to social security.

Then they can experience the joys of how they've goverened.

“George Bush is trying to cement his place in history as the absolute worse president America has ever had to suffer.”

I wouldn’t say “cement,” since the worst thing about his presidency, Iraq, hasn’t caused as much damage as Korea or Vietnam. Plus, there’s still the possibility that we’ll win. He has been completely ineffectual, with the exception of the tax cuts. I’d like to see the figures, but I bet the tax cuts have been nullified by the bailouts and the “Free Drugs for Old People” Act.

“When Facism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” - Sinclair Lewis

Who prominent figure in the government has wrapped themselves in the flag and used religion to be elected?? George Bush? NO. Nancy Peolsi? Yes. Sinclair Lewis was right.

What are “market rates”? Can anyone possible tell after all the monetary intervention over the years.

Lewis was behind the times. The fascists had already been here, and they were called Progressives. We, ironically, call them liberals.

“I WILL NOT stand by quietly while my FREEDOM is encroached upon or altogether taken away!”

Where have you been for the past 50 years, then? This doesn’t make me happy, either...but I blame Republicans for getting us to this point in time as well.

We have literally done NOTHING to stop the march of Communism in America. Hell, most people don’t even SEE it! (Think, ‘Frog in pot of slowly boiling water.’)
