The battle for votes in Pennsylvania's Clinton country(Obama in trouble)
salon ^

Posted on 09/21/2008 9:41:07 PM PDT by maccaca

A weekend in Scranton (more appealing than its inclusion on Forbes magazine's recent list of "America's Fastest-Dying Cities" might suggest) provides anecdotal evidence that voters have yet to fully grasp the implications of the incredible shrinking financial sector. At Chick's Diner in Scranton Sunday morning, a 22-year-old factory worker named Tim G. (he would not reveal his full last name) who will be casting his first vote for McCain in November, sniffed, "Where's the recession we're supposed to be in. What recession? And if there is a recession, it's probably because of the Democratic House."

... One of the trickiest things about this campaign is deciphering precisely what voters mean when they say they do not know enough about Obama. In Madonna's view, "It means that they're confused about all the things that Hillary Clinton said about him during the seven weeks she was campaigning here in the primary." He cited everything from charges of inexperience to the media controversy over purported "elitism." Clinton, whose father's roots were in Scranton, won Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties by a 3-to-1 margin. Kevin Donohue, a young Obama canvasser who grew up in Biden's old neighborhood of Green Ridge, talked about the "Hillary holdouts" -- both men and women -- whom he encounters while knocking on doors in Scranton. "I think it's a personal affinity for Hillary," Donohue said. "They identify with her more. They see Obama as a little more of a fast talker." ... Casey, who strongly supported Obama in the April Democratic primary, wonders if things like Hillary nostalgia and uncertainty about Obama may represent something more insidious. "There are parts of northeastern Pennsylvania where race is a barrier," he said, bringing up the topic unbidden. "We have to work around it and confront it. I wonder if with some voters, the background is race and they're putting up other issues.

As we can see, "race" is one of the main talking points for the DEMs. They don't have ideas appealing to a majority of Americans. I would give up a year's salary to see McCain-Palin take PA and defeat that race-baiter Obama.

An entire article of wishful thinking. And the saddest part of it was wishing the financial market problems would affect the real economy by election day. This guy is litterally wishing for a depression.

It would be cool to se PA go McCain/Palin. The probably insurmountable hurdle is the number of dead democrat voters in Pittsburgh and Philly.

FWIW my sons and I visited the McCain HQ in Pittsburgh a couple of weeks ago. I'm heing kind when I say it was less than inspiring. We didn't get an ipmression of gung-ho enthusiasm from the camp. The 3 staffers were doing what they could but there were no position papers, few handouts...all in all it looked like they were just going through the motions.

Hopefully that will have changed by the time of our next visit.

No its not race, its that they are so bitter, clinging onto their guns and their religion so fiercely they cannot accept such a ray of sunshine that is Obama. Coughs

Bingo. They are not getting high enough Democrat numbers and they know it, so the current strategy is to try to embarrass or guilt Dems into voting Obama.

Because it’s all about the issues, you see.

Scranton? Hah...that’s a hotbed of bitter Catholic gun and Bible clingers. Word is that not even Hillary got a warm welcome when she was there during the St. Patty’s parade in March. I can only imagine that support for McCain has solidified and any support for Obama has evaporated.

Not so sure about that. In Pittsburgh both Mayor Ravenstahl and County Exec Onorato were Hillary supporters, and ex-Philly mayor and current guv Ed Rendell was her PA chairman during the primaries.

Rendell’s been issuing some very veiled warnings to the Obama campaign lately. He outwardly supports Obama ‘cuz he’s a Democrat, but who knows how he really feels and what he and Hillary have talked about in the last few weeks.

If Fast Eddie doesn’t give the word, they’ll be little voter fraud in Philly. I suspect the same in The ‘Burgh ‘cuz Luke and Dan are Fast Eddie’s acolytes.

My exact reaction.

Please Obama, kick this dead horse. Loud and often. People just love it when you lecture them about race relations.

OK, you’ve heard it here first: The polls are now completelt meaningless. The 35 poinnt swing in the Jewish vote gives McCain NY. It is over. The polls simply are not structered properly to read this.

And this is not a short term shift, it is a long term cultural one.

Clinton, whose father's roots were in Scranton...

Hillary's from Scranton, Biden's from Scranton. Is everyone from Scranton? My son worked in Scranton one summer, is he from Scranton? I drove through Scranton once, am I from Scranton?
