The October Surprise was a nasty, conspiratorial hit piece that the media tried to nudge into the last days of the 1988 election, just like you said. I was working at an NPR affiliate radio station and my partisan ultra lib boss thought the Pacifica constructed hit piece was awesome. He wanted to run it the Wednesday before the election.

The program closed with: “George Bush is guilty of treason.” I told my boss, “There was no war so no treason. This is ludicrous. You can be sued for running this.” It was 1988. It didn't run.

The media need people like you on the inside, bringing perspective. This goes for the left and the right. Unfortunately, situations like the one you described are rare in a world where “everyone” is a democrat.
