When Free Republic was going down over and over again some of the freepers were posting on Yahoo FR that we were under DOS attacks.

As I understand it, you suggest that ‘thousands’ go to a certain site at certain times and it overwhelms the server??

No, you commandeer zombie PCs under control of various worms/trojan horses and order them to ping a particular site to death.

Basically the server is bombarded with worthless data requests, crowding out legitimate site requests.

And its not that hard to do.

You have the right idea, but let me clarify further:

The use of the terms DoS and DDoS make an explicit connotation that it’s a deliberate attack on a system, as opposed to a website just getting too popular for its britches.

Last night I posted on a FR thread that hackers and other creeps on FR have already been turned in to the FBI

I wonder if some of the children on FR who are entranced by hacking are ready and willing to spend 5+ years in a federal prison with Bubba.....

Anyone who does not believe the FBI and Secret Service are already all over Michelle Malkin's blog and FR and elsewhere with a huge net are crazy!

There are a nimber of retired PIs and LEOs and one particular FBI profiler who will be thrilled to have some fun nailing those after Governor Sarah Palin and her family and also Fox News Channel and others

Those who hack, plant viruses, trojans, worms - intending to disrupt the internet - EMS - PDs - FDs - hospitals - etc - you must be aware the federal penalties now include life in a federal prison - no parole or "early outs" there

People die because some little nutcase scumbag thinks he/she/it is a web wizard
