There was a time not so long ago when an American presidents first instinct when faced with an international crisis was to call up Downing Street to solicit the thoughts of Washingtons closest ally. Within hours of the September 11 attacks in 2001, President George W Bush was on the phone to Tony Blair. Their conversation had a seminal influence on the strategy that led to the overthrow of the Taliban in Afghanistan, which had provided a haven for the attackers.
In the spring of 2002, when it seemed that India and Pakistan were on the brink of launching all-out nuclear war, the joint strategy agreed by Messrs Blair and Bush succeeded in averting an international catastrophe. And when Israel invaded southern Lebanon in the summer of 2006, the Prime Minister and President provoked an international outcry after they agreed that Israel should be given a free rein to destroy Hizbollahs terrorist infrastructure.

If people want on or off this list, please let me know.
But he has such great achievements to offset this, like the establishment of sharia courts in London...
Great article, which is bound to bring the ire of the European Left down on his head....LOL.
They need to bring back Tony Blair. He was that country’s best leader since Maggie Thatcher.
Will we never learn?
We can not make peace with the devil, neither can they.
I don’t think we ever did have the ear of the Whitehouse. Our value to the US was made clear in the run up to the Iraq War, and the subsequent running of it.
...like the establishment of sharia courts in London...
Honestly, you are going to have to be much more careful with what you type. This is half of the story, and perhaps you intended to leave it like this; a bit of misinformation that demonises the UK.
UK Law is highest, but if certain faiths want to be tried according to an outdated and archaic principle then go for it. Anything serious, major organised crime, murder, terrorism etc, will be dealt with under British Law.
Our law is finding and prosecuting these people, and expunging then from our midst. Only today a teenager was convicted of terrorism offences.
“But he has such great achievements to offset this, like the establishment of sharia courts in London...”
You beta me to it.
As originally suggested by the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams himself.
Actually, Blair was a leftist, although not so crazed and far out as Brown, who is a dunce. Blair was far to the left on such social issues as gay rights. And he got on much better with clinton, whom he took as his chief political model, than with Bush. He really enjoyed the war with Serbia, whereas he only joined the war against Saddam because he knew how utterly important the Special Relationship was to the U.K., as a counterweight to the EU.
And Bush DID greatly value England’s presence as an ally in the Iraq war. He was willing to delay the invasion by as much as six months in order to wait for Blair to get on board, which probably led to greater difficulties and allowed Saddam and the Russians to get most of the WMDs out of the country.
Gordon Brown did finally wake up to the importance of the Special Relationship and tried to make nice noises when he paid his visit, but it was a bit late to be convincing.
So it was the Brits fault the Iraqi’s got all their WMD’s out? Hmm, never heard that one before.
Blair was a Centrist. Always has been, always will be.
We in the UK are forever made to understand in no uncertain terms that we are along for the ride, but woe betide any man who actually voices an opinion that isn’t scripted for them. Its a one way ‘special relationship’, just look at the extradition proceedures the US made us sign? They can accost our people without showing the UK any evidence. They merely have to demand, and we comply.
Well maybe with the Conservatives in power, we are going to stand on our own feet and follow our own path. The British path.
Is very accurate, The UK is allowing sharia courts, so a white woman born in england gets a fair day in court and an arab women is forced into sharia court, where she has no rights. Of course she opts to go to sharia court, to avoid being the target of a honor killing that UK authorities usually rule as suicide. The UK has taken the first step down a very dangerous path.
The first problem with voluntary Sharia law courts is that it establishes the principle that Islamic law is binding, whether it is or not.
Next, what muslim woman who wants to live another day would decline to be bound by an Islamic court? “Honour” killings are on the increase across the western world, and the establishment of Islamic courts can only legitimize the attitudes that lead to violence against women.
Once the principle of voluntary submission to Islamic law in family affairs is well established, Sharia will spread to other areas of the law, and will begin to be applied to non-Muslims, involuntarily.
The man is an ar*e.
Can I take any idiot in the US and treat everything they say as gospel? Nancy Pelosi perhaps????
It is a stretch to BLAME the BRITS, but it is true that the invasion was delayed by request of Blair to make the case of WMD's in Iraq. Blair needed this [WMD] cover to lessen the British people's outrage at invading Iraq.
Hence Colin Powell's historic presentation to the UN and hence unwittingly making WMD's the [media's] "ONLY" reason for the IRAQ INVASION.
A mistake of catastrophic proportions as it turns out.
No, its ruled as an honour killing, hence the title.
Some blokes were recently put in the clink for doing just that kind of thing.
Im not going to fight for her rights? These are small things, beneath my attention. It isn’t going to affect me in any way. In the cases where there could be an effect on Britain at large, Common Law will be used. It was today. Common Law put another terrorist behind bars. Not Sharia Law. British Law.
If they want to abuse their own people, by all means.
...and will begin to be applied to non-Muslims, involuntarily...
Not a chance. Not here in the UK. There would be a revolution.
You really are clueless as to what Sharia courts do, and how little protection women in muslim society have.
It is ironic that you could exhibit such utter ignorance of Islamic society in the same post you use to disparage another’s knowledge of the UK.
Sorry, but thats sounds like you’re blaming us.
I honestly have never heard this point of view expressed before, and it frankly beggars belief.
...invading Iraq...
you mean liberating right?
I know PRECISELY what kind of pressures Sharia Law places on its women. I know PRECISELY how bias it is towards the male of the species.
I know PRECISELY how little I care. Its their boat, they should sail it.
