“These three books plus
The Earth Abides
The Long Walk
The Lord of the Flies
are mandatory reading for my homeschooled children in their sophmore year.”

Ugh! “Lord of the Flies” Another depressing book. I'd never inflict that upon my kids. I'm not familiar with the other two.

I think I'd agree with you with “Animal Farm” and “Brave New World”, but I think 1984 is rather intense to force someone to read it. The torture and betrayal scenes in particular I would not want to force my kids to read.

I found 1984 a bore. Orwell was overrated.

Lord of the Flies and 1984 are intense and difficult books about man’s base qualities. That is why they are important to read and understand. my older children have come back to me and have stated that those readings have helped them immensly in their studies and in their understanding of humans and politics.
