The campaign puts out a statement from former Fannie Mae chief Franklin Raines, disowning ties to Obama, after a McCain ad attacked him for the ties.
The Washington Post reported -- with the kind of blind sourcing that suggests the source was Raines -- that Raines had "taken calls from Barack Obama's presidential campaign seeking his advice on mortgage and housing policy matters."
Raines said in the statement through the campaign, "I am not an advisor to Barack Obama, nor have I provided his campaign with advice on housing or economic matters."
Obama spokesman Bill Burton added an attack:
This is another flat-out lie from a dishonorable campaign that is increasingly incapable of telling the truth. Frank Raines has never advised Senator Obama about anything -- ever. And by the way, someone whose campaign manager and top advisor worked and lobbied for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac shouldn't be throwing stones from his seven glass houses.
UPDATE: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers notes that Obama didn't contradict the claim when it first appeared in the Post.

Team McCain scores a direct hit on obama!
It is my contention that actions of individuals at Fannie Mae and Freddi Mac were criminal-If Bush had any balls he’d announce that the justice dept is launching an investigation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Eventhough he’s only in office 3 more months the DoJ should put a pitbull on this investigation of criminal activity at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac-as the investigation progress over that three month period DoJ should “leak” details of the investigation.
Obama lies and seems to get away with it. All that matters is enough people hear it and believe it on Nov. 4 to not promote Obama to the highest office.
The more people exaggerate these problems, the more pressure there is on these companies, the less we will see in terms of affordable housing.
It reminds me of “I am not a crook...”

Thats how I found this article!
I went there to look up info on Raines, and found this article!
We need a screen shot of the old Wiki entry! If anyone can even do that!
McCain most certainly bring this up at the DEBATES.
I can’t link it because I am on my BlackBerry but there is a July 16 Washington Post article clearly stating that the Obama campaign solicited advice from Raines.
Sweet link! Thanks
