Palin cancels Wyoming visit
By The Associated Press
Thursday, September 18, 2008 2:06 AM MDT

JACKSON -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin will not visit Wyoming next week, deciding instead to attend the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Taking her place at a fundraiser in Jackson Hole will be Cindy McCain, wife of Republican presidential nominee John McCain.

**SNIP**

"The people in Wyoming are so excited to have the future first lady in the state," said Amy Larimer, executive director of the state party. "The buzz is just general excitement. It's an honor for us, as well."

Palin on Monday plans to attend a rally outside the United Nations by several American Jewish groups to protest Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who nearly won the Democratic presidential nomination, canceled her plans to attend the rally after finding out that Palin would be there.

Scarlett said that except for Palin, plans for the breakfast fundraiser remain the same. The event at the Teton Pines development is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.

The cost of the breakfast fundraiser will be $250 and $1,000 to have a photo taken with Cindy McCain. For $2,500, participants can participate in a round-table discussion with Cindy McCain and former Wyoming U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson.

In her own way, Cindy McCain is as unique and remarkable a person as Sarah Palin. Business CEO, race driver, private plane pilot, and one who has been in the prison of addiction, yet escaped and was rehabilitated.

Certainly she had the good luck to have been born to parents who were extraordinarily good at accumulating a fortune, and she has built on that fortune through her own efforts. And she did it while still maintaining an air of grace, and enough compassion to go to some distant place where misery is rife, and apply her touch to make things somewhat better for people who nave known no surcease. She is not one to merely send the money, she goes herself there to do what she is able, and she carried out those efforts as sort of a volunteer for a personal Peace Corps.

This is truly a win-win scenario for the McCain/Palin ticket. Besides, truly hearing a very conservative individual speak at the very leftist U.N. General Assembly is, more often than not, a “very foreign thing” indeed.

Cindy was also a special needs teacher, and it’s amazing that both Cindy and Sarah have such strong connections to the issues that involve the special needs population.

This smacks of Obama touring Europe to prove his ‘foreign policy experience’. Palin will get no votes from the UN General Assembly. Her time would be better used in Pennsylvania and Ohio than in New York City.

What makes you think she's going to speak there?

I’d rather her in NYC and highlight the fact that Hillary is not there.

I certainly think this is a good idea... Obama... where are you? Obama? Obama?

She’s effectively going to Hillary’s “home state” and chasing her out. Hillary backed down.

...this smacks of Obama touring Europe...

I see your point, but I must disagree. The main reason that Sarah will be in New York is not to go to the U.N., but to participate in the protest against Iran.

The visit to the U.N. is a secondary matter.

I think that her appearance at the protest, especially when coupled with the much publicized cancellation by Hillary, is a very good strategy.

Also, Wyoming is a Republican lock.

I do believe that her presence at those anti-Iran rallies would underscore the team’s committment to our friend Israel. NOBama’s lack of representation is a big deal.

KIRO in Seattle said that McCain would also be there, supposedly quoting the WSJ, but I haven’t seen it reported anywhere else.

Joe Biden would attend, but his staff said they didn’t expect him back from his foreign policy tour of Antarctica until Tuesday.

Quite the team: John, Cindy and Todd are all pilots and all three race as well (well, John was an accomplished street-racer in his early years, heh-heh). Sarah would fly, but doesn't have time for it!

"Palin will get no votes from the UN General Assembly."

She's not going into the UN, she's going to participate in a protest outside the UN.

//”The people in Wyoming are so excited to have the future first lady in the state.” // I think this spokesperson might be mistaken: I have seen no reports of Michelle Obama appearing in Wyoming.
