WASHINGTON - Despite an intense effort to distance himself from the way his party has done business in Washington, Senator John McCain is seen by voters as far less likely to bring change to Washington than Senator Barack Obama. Mr. McCain is widely viewed as a “typical Republican” who would continue or expand President Bush’s policies, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

I agree completely. It is instructive for all other ambitious Republicans paying attention that McCain is today being tattooed with the Bush label even after the grief and betrayal he gave W on multiple issues (eg. Gang of 8 - Judges).
If any Republican earned the right of incumbent separation it was McCain. What did he get for his troubles? No Conservative support that doesn't originate with Sarah Palin and no Liberal support when the game is on the line.
He didn't want to, but McCain proved once and for all that the Conservative Base is the key to Republican victory. Period.
I think he's counting on conservatives to vote for him because they are so afraid of the alternative. Most people aren't that far to the right, and he's trying to appeal to most people. People are so fed up with George Bush and his administration that I was beginning to think that Republicans could nominate Jesus Christ and still not win. But McCain is doing surprisingly well. Choosing Palin was I think probably a brilliant move on his part. Republicans might just squeak this one out, and I can't think of any other candidate that could have done this for us. Candidates farther to the right would never have been able to get the kind of support McCain is getting.
Major tactical blunder. Socialism (R) is still Socialism.
On the contrary, it would hurt McCain to completely disregard GWB.
Do you all remember, when McCain was behind in the poll during the primaries, the MSM keep spitting out garbages like: “Support for Iraq WAR is hurting McCain chance...”
Just remember, everything the MSM is trying to do these days is to depress the Republican base, to suppress voter turnout.
Having said that, every conservatives with good conscience also know that for the past decade the Republican party is not doing anything worth our votes. I don’t see myself voting for Republicans, I am voting only to defeat the left wing crooks.
Agreed....it was a big gaffe by McCain. But they have an opportunity to strike back but they have to do it loud and fast.
They need to go back on offense. Hang Franklin Raines and Barney Frank and Jim Johnson around BHO’s neck.
And not voting for McCain would be a major tactical blunder on the part of people who think he's not conservative enough, because then Obama would win. That's why most conservatives are going to vote for him even if they have to hold their noses to do it. He's never going to please those people that hate him so much they'd let Obama win just so they didn't have to vote for him, and bending over backwards to try to win 100 of these people over is likely to cost him a 1000 votes from the broader America. McCain is not ultra-conservative. He never was and he never will be, and frankly that's one of the reasons he's enjoying as much support as he is in this time when people are so angry with Republicans, Bush and his administration in particular. McCain is playing the populist, and that's just what he needs to do if he wants to win this election. Stay home on election day. Write Duncan Hunter's name in or something stupid like that. See where that gets you. I'm going to try to get a Republican elected so we don't have Democrats controlling all three branches of government.
The problem is the Dems are so much better at lying. The lies are to convince people that Bill Clinton, Hillary, Obama, and other Dems are saints or “rock stars” to the younger generation.
They use lies to degrade Bush/Republicans or anything (including the truth) that gets in their way of power.
We’ll confront the lies for awhile but like a worned out record we get tired of hearing the same ole stuff. They win because what we see as worned out they repeat over and over again seeing VICTORY as the end result.
We stop lifting our people up and let the lying powers take over to win.
We don’t fight back hard or long enough so we have no one to blame but ourselves.
Why worry about McCain throwing Bush under the bus when most including Bush done that a long time ago.
If the thought of Pelosi, Reid, the Clintons, & Obama as the messiah does not make us sick enough to fight back nothing will.
I find it so fascinating that the media attempts to shape public opinion through headlines. All their Palin smear attempts failed. So they shifted to something else. Now they’re shifting again with the McCain=Bush shtick. won’t work. And they have the Obama rising in the polls nonsense going as well.

But McCain was correct. We fundamentally have a strong economy built on principles of Capitalism. It is the political corruption and favoritism that has abused and corroded the pillars of our foundation. The political system is warped due to the greed and depraity of man. Businesses have grown into institutions and bureaucracies that have emerged corrupt with power.
