SAN PABLO --
Amariae Sanders was a 16-year-old boy who may have thought a San Pablo gift shop would be an easy mark. But when he vaulted the counter while armed with a sawed-off shotgun, he had no way of knowing that the store owner would fight back, police say.
Brian Wogsland, the owner of A&L Posters on San Pablo Ave., had been robbed twice before and was ready when Sanders and another young man entered about 5 p.m. Tuesday, authorities said. He pulled a handgun and fired numerous shots, striking Sanders in the head and chest.
In an instant, Sanders was dead, and Wogsland was left trying to deal with the third - and most violent - incident over the past year in which he was targeted by robbers.
"He was pretty upset when we interviewed him," said police Sgt. Dave Lewellyn. "He obviously didn't want to have to shoot anybody. But he has been the victim of violent crime, and at some point he's going to have to take these kinds of measures to protect himself. He told us he was in fear for his life."
After Wogsland opened fire, the other would-be robber fled out the front door of the shop at 14650 San Pablo Ave. He remained at large today.
Sanders attended Delta Continuation High School in Richmond, officials said.
Police have contacted his mother, who lives in San Pablo. "She seemed to be a genuinely good person," Lewellyn said.
The most recent robbery at Wogsland's store happened two months ago. In one of the two earlier robberies, he was beaten and had a gun fired near his face, police said. Suspects have been arrested in at least one of the earlier cases.
Wogsland did not return a call today seeking comment.

Another long, long criminal career (one that surely would have eventually involved murder(s)) nipped in the bud. An innocent person or persons will now live a long, normal, happy life, thanks to the right to keep and bear arms. All in all, a good day in Dodge. No tears for the thug who died, despite his age. He is where he belongs and deserves to be.
Odds are that the shop owner can come to terms with this.
The mother can thank her son, not the shop owner.
There I was, minding my own business, working to provide for myself and my family so that the government wouldn't have to when in walked a criminal intent on taking the fruits of my labor and threatening my life. He got what was coming to him!
> Feel sorry for the punks mother/family. They are also the victims of Sanders criminality.
I DON’T feel sorry for the punk’s family. They obviously did not teach him morals and the difference between right and wrong. They carry the blame for his death because they chose to ignore their obligation to teach him how to live within society.
KTVU 2 semi news out of Oakland is getting more liberal each day.
My trophy wife likes to leave it on during breakfast, before I make her go work :), for the weather, background news and a little local news. Even she has started complaining about how liberal it has become.
I stay away to avoid what you did re the screaming at the tv. She has actually yelled at the tv a couple times this month with some of KTVU 2 pseudo news. She may be more protective of Sarah than I am.
After being robbed twice including a beating this shop owner should feel no remorse for saving his own life. A 16 year old punk with a sawed off shotgun is a losing situation for any victim. We still don’t know what kind of a record the punk’s accomplice has...
Ruh-roh-not a good pool for a jury. I hope the store owner wasn’t Korean or Vietnamese.
*Sniff.* I love a happy ending.
I’m sorry for the shop owner, though. I hope he works through it.
What, he was supposed to wait to see if the thugs would actually use the sawed-off shotgun? And the poor man had already been robbed/beaten twice before. My gosh, anyone who would say he acted rashly , should put themselves in his shoes, after having it happen twice before, and see how they’d react.
Those damn reporters. The guy had been robbed and beaten before. He wasn’t going to see how this one played out if left to the thugs. I can imagine that the owner is experiencing some kind of emotion after shooting the perp. It’s natural. Beats the heck out of either being robbed, beaten or killed. The BS of “ comply “ with the perps is just that, BS. You might take me out or wound me, but, I’d try like hell to kill the bastards first. I can’t see groveling to these perp bastards and getting shot anyways.
fixed.
I'm sure he was an "aspiring rapper."
As compared to a deadly weapon or a very, very deadly weapon?
Have you ever had to?
"The mother can thank her son, not the shop owner."
Yes, and his 'sperm donor' father, and maybe herself. Anyway, its anything but 'nice.'
Yes, but he should have shot twice - the other perp got away!
Yeah.
I was screaming at the nutburgers and my First Wife came running because she thought a snake was under my desk or FR was down again...

I’ll take the snake any day, your First Wife is a pretty good shot with a double barrel. ;-)
That owner had been roughed up pretty badly in one of two other robberies in the last 2 years or so is what I heard.
I bet Brian , his family and friends are quite happy that he’s still breathing. What’s your problem with that.
My Brother in law(a cop), while off duty,
in uniform on his way home when a slimeball shot him and his partner. He emptied his pistol on the S.O.B. killing him.
when I asked him what he was thinking when he pulled the trigger he said “I wanted him to see St. Peter before me”. Yes, I and our families are glad he and his partner are still alive and the Perp is buried......
