Libertarian Group Condemns Sarah Palin for Not Killing Disabled Baby in Abortion
Life News ^ | 9/17/08 | Steven Ertelt

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A writer for a libertarian group has written perhaps the most scathing attack on pro-life vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin since the Alaska governor was announced weeks ago as John McCain's running mate. Nicholas Provenzo condemns Palin for the birth of her baby Trig, who has Down syndrome.

Provenzo, who writes for the Center for the Advancement of Capitalism, not only bashes her for allowing Trig to be born, but says she should have made the so-called morally justifiable decision to kill him in an abortion.

The Center for the Advancement of Capitalism bills itself as a group "dedicated to advancing individual rights and economic freedom through Ayn Rand's philosophy of Objectivism."

"Like many, I am troubled by the implications of Alaska governor and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin's decision to knowingly give birth to a child disabled with Down syndrome," Provenzo writes.

"Given that Palin's decision is being celebrated in some quarters, it is crucial to reaffirm the morality of aborting a fetus diagnosed with Down syndrome (or by extension, any unborn fetus)—a freedom that anti-abortion advocates seek to deny," he adds.

Provenzo advocates not only a discriminatory, but apparently a pro-eugenics view of the disabled that rivals that of Nazi Germany.

"A parent has a moral obligation to provide for his or her children until these children are equipped to provide for themselves," he contends. "Because a person afflicted with Down syndrome is only capable of being marginally productive (if at all) and requires constant care and supervision, unless a parent enjoys the wealth to provide for the lifetime of assistance that their child will require, they are essentially stranding the cost of their child's life upon others"

Provenzo goes on to condemn National Review writer Michael Franc, who sees Down syndrome's victims as "ambassadors of God" who "offer us the opportunity to rise to that greatest of all challenges."

In a rebuke that smacks of selfishness at its worse, Provenzo says, "for many" potential parents of disabled babies, "that opportunity for challenge is little more than a lifetime of endless burden."

Fortunately for Trig, Palin decided otherwise.

While as many as 80-90 percent of unborn children diagnosed with Down syndrome become victims of abortion, Palin didn't let her child become a statistic. Palin, who has deeply-felt pro-life views, gave birth to her fifth child in April and the baby was diagnosed with the condition.

"Trig is beautiful and already adored by us," Palin said in a statement LifeNews.com obtained at the time.

"We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives," she said.

'We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed," the 44 year-old governor added.

Trig was born on Friday, one month before his due date, and he weighed 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

Well. So much for the greatly exaggerated supposed belief of Libertarians that people should mind their own dern business. Guess they were just pulling our legs.

In fairness, the author is just one guy, who follows one particular branch of libertarianism, writing for an organization that I first heard about from reading this thread.

He doesn't speak for Libertarians as a whole anymore than Ron Paul speaks for Republicans as a whole.

So life is now dependent on whether you can “pay” for that life or not.

So I guess we can all forget about Africa now.. we are absolved of having to give aid to anyone.. homeless.. African.. disabled.

They aren’t “productive”.

Well if you ever needed an excuse to kill people.. you apparently have one now.

Nicholas Provenzo's profile

Nickname: capitalismcenter
Location: Alexandria, VA USA
Birthday: July 23(Remind me)
In My Own Words:
Hi. I'm Nicholas, founder and chairman of the Center for the Advancement of Capitalism (www.capitalismcenter.org), and five-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. I buy most of my books from amazon and I enjoy the user reviews people post about the things they buy, and I hope you find my reviews just as helpful.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A2UGJ6J4RO0GEY">http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/A2UGJ6J4RO0GEY

I would remind this Marine of his own birthday, but it would probably fall on deaf ears. In an address (about antitrust) given to the doctors of the Colorado Medical Society on May 04, 2003, he said,

"...The founders' application of the principle of individual rights to America created the greatest nation in the history of humankind. As the recipients of this legacy; we should demand a more perfect application of these principles to our relationships. The great John Hancock, signer of the Declaration of Independence and financier of the revolution has this Latin phrase engraved on his tombstone: “Obsta Principiis” –Resist the first encroachments..."
He quotes the Declaration apparently blind to that part of it that affirms that the individual Right to Life is an inalienable gift from the Creator, which neither he or anyone else has the right to deny to the innocent.

His sanctimonious moralizing is perverted on its face. What kind of person express moral revulsion and condemnation for not killing an innocent human being? He certainly is not a believer in the Creator referred to in the Declaration of Independence. By denying that Divine and Transcendent foundation of morality and ethics acknowledged by the Founders, he vitiates the only possible ground for his moral outrage. He will never be able to explain or account for the objective and unchanging nature of moral notions like good or evil that that he just takes for granted as an unargued philosophical bias, and for which he presumes to be the arbiter and spokesman.

I am the father of a Down Syndrome child named Maximilian who died suddenly about twenty years ago at the age of two and a half. Max was one of the sweetest, most beautiful blessings from God that I have ever known. Somewhere on this thread such children are called "Ambassadors of God". Yes. That's what Max was to me. He truly was a most excellent gift of God. I miss him to this day.

People such as Mr. Provenzo who suggest that precious little ones like Maximilian should be killed make my blood boil, and they will find in me an opponent as fierce, resolute and determined to defend them as any Marine. In the end I might not be the match of the Marine, but they might find me a much harder target than defenseless children, those very ambassadors of God, whom he wants to exterminate.

Obsta Principiis, Mr. Provenzo. Obsta Principiis. You can count on it.

Cordially,

I don’t see her as a feminist. Feminist is a dirty word. Their agenda over the years has been abortion and abortion only.

Sarah’s a woman. A real woman.

If this human scum thinks that babies who will be a burden on society should be aborted, I wonder if he therefore supports forcing all pregnant welfare moms to abort, since their babies will definitely be a burden on society.

“Technically, I’m opposed to contraception, but since demographics really IS destiny, I can’t feel too bad that the family-haters are doing it.”

And this is why we’re going to eventually eliminate prenatal infanticide in this country. Not because of the actions of judges and politicians. But because children tend to reflect the attitudes and beliefs of their parents. Those who are pro-creation are having lots of kids who will reflect the attitudes and beliefs of their parents. As will their children. And so on.

The culture of death, on the other hand, is dying it’s ethic. Their children would reflect their attitudes and beliefs. But they’re aborting and contracepting those children.

Math is very difficult to beat.

“Pro-death Catholics are a very small minority, this IS NOT the case with libertarians.”

I respectfully disagree. I think if you were to survey those who identify themselves as Catholic, you’d find that the differences in attitudes towards prenatal infanticide and those of the general population are not that different. Unfortunately. Here’s an old (but interesting) story from National Catholic Reporter:

http://ncronline.org/NCR_Online/archives2/2005c/093005/093005o.php

As for libertarians generally being in favor of prenatal infanticide, I would tend to agree. But I think you greatly overstate the point. There is a healthy minority who strongly oppose the practice and who are just as libertarian in their views otherwise.

“Another difference is that Catholicism is a religion, NOT a political ideology.”

You apparently haven’t been around libertarians much. They often times are more zealous in their philosophical beliefs than folks who are religious.

Sounds awful brownshirt to me.

It was discovering the pro-choice plank of the Libertarian Party that made me realize that they are not a healthy addition to the American debate. "Pro-choice" is simply a term applied as window-dressing.

It means "pro-death." Folks can argue all they want with that, but the fact is that pro-choice = pro-abortion = pro-death.

And it puts the lie to the very "liberty" that underlies the first part of the "liber"tarian name. They don't believe in liberty. How can they possibly believe that denying any innocent person the Right to LIVE is pro-liberty? What the hell difference does liberty make if someone is permitted to MURDER you?

They simply aren't "Liber"Tarian. They are "Death"otarians....NecroTarians.

This guy comes off sounding like the culture of death high preist he is.

Most Americans will hear his calace and disgusting words and be revolted by it and drawn all the more to Sarah.

Sarah Palin is shaking the leftist-liberal and this culture of death house to its foundation, and bringing it down. She and her family, their faith, their values, and their story represent the absolute refutation of all the tired old liberal mantras and victimology that they malignantly use to mentally, pshycologically, and financially enslave whole classes of people.

From women's rights, to family values, to gun rights, to the choice for life, to energy policy, to taxation, to envrionmentalism, and on and on...she is a wrecking ball to the leftist, liberal, socialist house.

I believe that all people, at their core, want freedom -- the freedom to be happy and to succeed without the government controlling their lives. Sarah Palin and her family represent this brilliantly.

Sarah Palin is the first national candidate since Reagan that the average American can genuinely identify with, she is our neighbor, friend, coworker, etc. and the left simply doesn't know how to address that.

Exactly! The concept of "personal freedom" DOES NOT release us from our moral obligation to defend the rights of others, because if it did then "personal freedom" would actually be anarchy and anarchy and liberty cannot coexist.

Sane and moral people don't view their children as "burdens" or as "punishment." 1979. An Air Force enlisted couple had their second child, born in an Air Force Base hospital. That couple was my wife and me. We had a baby girl. Full term. What we never knew before birth was that the baby had developed hydrocephalus (water head). When she was born, her head was the size of a two-year old's. The birth was to be natural, but my wife could not push this baby out. She was stuck at the bottom of the birth canal. The doctor ended up having to do a horrendous amount of cutting at the bottom of the birth canal to get this child out. The baby was taken to Variety Children's Hospital an hour away. There, neurosurgeons didn't expect her to live. They said that if she lives to be four days old, they would install a shunt, and then go from there. Four days rolled by and the baby was alive. A shunt was installed. We placed a plaque over the baby's bed, "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5) We prayed, and many others came by to pray. Within a week, we took our daughter home. When she was three weeks old, the area around the shunt was leaking fluid. We took her to the neurosurgeon's office. Our doctor was out of town. The older associate took us in. The doctor took us in to a small examining room and turned off all lights. He asked us to allow our eyes to become adjusted to the dark. Then he took a common flashlight and sent a beam of light down through her huge soft spot. Her entire cranial section, down to her ears, lit up like a light bulb. "What do you see?" asked the doctor. "Only light," we answered. "That's right," the doctor said, "Except for a few small areas of seemingly loose and floating brain matter, there is nothing in their but fluid." These are the words of that neurosurgeon: "Your baby is USELESS . . . she can never be anything but a severely retarded invalid. Allow me to make some arrangements -- you sign some papers, and let the state take this baby. Go home, raise your son, and FORGET that this baby was ever born." Of course, we did not. We asked the doctor to fix the shunt. He did. We took our daughter home. We played with and stimulated our daughter, and we worked and prayed and worked and prayed. In this photo (2006)is our daughter at 27 years old, standing with her grandfather, her mother, and her elder brother's young son. This young woman is a mathematics whiz. She is a musician who plays the piano and mandolin, and she has published two books on Christian poetry. She teaches in a Christian school in a southern state. She grew up with us in Asia and still handles a lot of Chinese language pretty well. We just bought her a new lap top computer for her 29th birthday to help her with her writing. We are ever grateful to our Lord Jesus Christ for His mercies, and for His watchcare over our daughter for now almost three fruitful decades. You may surmise what my opinion is of that Libertarian author.

Libertarians fall into 2 groups:

1) Those who believe that life begins at conception. Life is the most fundamental of all our gifts from God and, indeed, having life makes liberty and the pursuit of happiness possible. I belong to this group of Libertarians.

2) Those who believe that the woman’s body has more rights that the life of her infant.

Sounds like the pro-choice Provenzo doesn't like the choice for life.

Sounds like he suffers from "a lifetime of endless burdens."

What’s your point? Do you even know the first thing about liberty? Liberty is impossible without life.
