Feeling Minnesota (Midwest Blue State Turns Purple Alert)
National Review ^ | 9/16/2008 | Mark Hemingway

Posted on 09/16/2008 5:39:51 PM PDT by goldstategop

I just spoke to some McCain campaign sources up in Minnesota and they pretty much confirmed what the polls have been telling us for a while — Minnesota really is in play for McCain. Of course, you could simply dismiss that as McCain spin, but even Obama surrogate Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius acknowledged today on the stump in Iowa that the state was awfully close.

Still, though my McCain sources made some interesting observations about what's they're seeing in Minnesota:

* McCain has been surprisingly strong in the urban Twin Cities area. They think the convention presence was a big help. * It's tied up in the Minnesota's "Iron Range" — the seven counties that make up the Northeastern part of the state. Traditionally, it's big Democratic-Farmer-Labor territory so it's surprising to see McCain doing so well there. There's a lot of sportsmen up there and they think gun issues are hurting Obama. * Those working for McCain on the ground in the state say that the momentum swing toward McCain began in earnest prior to the Palin pick. Timing wise, they trace it back to his strong performance at the Saddleback forum. * Minnesota and the upper Midwest tend to have extremely high voter turnout across the board so they think any unforeseen increase there in the youth vote for Obama will prove negligible. * McCain's Minnesota folks say they're already starting to see the national press pay more attention to the state. Seems to be a fresh angle as everybody is tired of visiting and talking about the same battleground states. Expect to hear a lot more about the state as the election nears.

Minnesota may not be trending Red. But its definitely feeling Purple. A longtime Midwest Blue State is now "in play."

Interesting that they credit Saddleback for it (if only Obama the chicken had agreed to town halls, this thing would be over). I would think Palin’s hockey mom street cred will help down the stretch in Minnesota as well.

Wisconsin is also trending that way. Last I heard is that Palin, er, McCain-Palin was with the margin of error. FWIW...which ain't much.

Also, there is still many German Catholic pro-life voters in the St Cloud area. It is unlikely that many of them will vote for Obama.

In the stronghold state of Illinois, no one is watching Barry's decline in the polls. This may be a bellwether example of Barry's losses.

http://www.pollster.com/polls/il/08-il-pres-ge-mvo.php

The above poll has not been updated since the wave of Gov Palin came on strong. Barry may well be below 50% in Illinois, but no one is noticing.

If the Indies and disenchanted DEMS are switching sides and since both King Richard of Chicago and Gov Blow-Dry-o-Vich have been relatively kind to Gov Palin, I think Illinois could surprise people.

I would credit the following:
1) Nominate Palin has likely gone a long way with blue collar, social conservative, and pro-life voters. A perfect counter to Obama’s northeast elitism.
2) Let’s not forget what also happened at the RNC - Democrats behaving badly. The big reason why Norm Coleman beat Fritz Mondale in 1992. There are a lot of DFL’ers in Minnesota, but they do not reward this behavior. In the long run, it will be the looney left wing of the Democratic Party’s undoing. Old Hubert threw the Commies out of the DFL, but this time the Commies have big money backing - unless sugar daddy George Soros lost his shirt recently (gloatgloatgloat, OK I know only class warfare DUmmies are supposed to do that. Ah what the heck, gloatgloatgloat.).

In MN, I work in an office of 50 outdoors loving people and I think there are a total of maybe 5 Obama supporters in that 50.

The state may not be “inplay” - but like NY and NJ, it forces Obama-and-whatshitsname to spend money and effort in places they used to feel were “in the bag”

Maybe I’m being pessimistic, but it’s almost as though these state polls are saying to the Dims that “okay, this is how many votes we need to manufacture to win in these parts of the country”.

Bush barely lost WI in 2004, it could happen.

That would be something to see Hussein-islamic-terroist-mole Obama lose his own state.

Bush won Wi. both times. McCain will too . Unfortunately not by enough to overcome the voter fraud here. It's pathetic here.
