Lansing, MI (AHN) - The campaign of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and the Democratic National Committee filed a lawsuit on Tuesday seeking an injunction against a county GOP leader and the Republican National Committee from implementing a reported plan to prohibit voters with foreclosed homes from casting ballots in November.
"Senator McCain has no real plan to turn Michigan's economy around or help families faced with losing their homes - so his party has decided the only way to save his campaign is to deny the right to vote to families most affected by his disastrous economic policies," Obama Campaign Manager David Plouffe said in an email announcing the lawsuit.
Democrats filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan along with three Michigan residents. "This 'lose your home, lose your vote' program is part of a broader scheme - misnamed an 'election integrity' program - to harass voters and suppress the vote throughout the State of Michigan in the upcoming election on November 4," they said in a news release.
The Michigan Messenger reported last week that Macomb County Republican Party Chairman James Carabelli was planning to use election challengers to keep voters with foreclosed homes from casting ballots. "We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren't voting from those addresses," he is quoted by the Obama campaign as saying.
Election laws in the Great Lakes State allow for parties to assign "challengers" to monitor polls on election day. Such workers are allowed to challenge a voter's eligibility such as one's being a true resident in the city. Pundits say a program to challenge voters with foreclosed homes will likely hit African-American voters the hardest.
Carabelli has denied making any such statement to the Michigan Messenger. "I never said anything even close to that. We won't be doing voter challenges on foreclosures, and we've never had a plan to do it," he told the Detroit News.
