Ukraine's pro-Western government collapses

Ukraine's pro-Western government has collapsed after the Russian invasion of Georgia triggered a political struggle between President Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko over whether the country's destiny lies with the West or Moscow.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk, speaker of the Ukraine's parliament, told MPs on Tuesday that the governing coalition linked to the popular "Orange Revolution" of 2004 was over.

"I officially declare the coalition of democratic forces in Ukraine's parliament dissolved," he said.

"This has been long expected, but for me it is extremely sad."

Ukraine's MPs now have 30 days to try and form a new ruling government coalition or Mr Yushchenko will have the power to dissolve the Parliament, triggering deeply divisive elections next month.

At the heart of the latest crisis is a bitter battle for power between Mr Yushchenko and Miss Timoshenko that exploded into the open after fighting broke out between Russia and Georgia in August.

The pair, former allies in the Orange Revolution against Ukraine's undemocratic pro-Moscow regime four years ago, have spectacularly fallen out after close allies of Mr Yushchenko charged Miss Timoshenko of "high treason and political corruption" for not siding with Georgia.

Miss Timoshenko has furiously denied the accusation of betraying her country for Moscow and the Ukrainian President's other charge that she was working with the pro-Russian opposition to plan a "coup" against him.

Mr Yushchenko's Our Ukraine group pulled out of the coalition earlier this month after the Timoshenko Bloc sided with the pro-Moscow opposition Party of Regions to pass laws that he saw as a threat to his presidential powers.

Mr Yushchenko and Miss Tymoshenko jointly led the 2004 Orange Revolution, which overturned the fraudulent presidential election victory of a pro-Moscow candidate, Viktor Yanukovych.

It seems that Russia is betting on at best (for them) an Obama presidency, and at worst a de-fanged new administration with little power to resist them.

I sense that with energy, finance, and geopolitics, we may be entering a sea change. The time may be here for the executive branch (McCain/Palin administration) to arch the back and resist the noisy leftist sedition. A principled group of new congress people under the threatening club of multiple vetoes would be helpful.

The reaction to Sarah Palin tells me that lots of people are ready for drastic measures to turn this country around in the right direction. Or I could be dreaming.

As someone with pretty strong ties to Ukraine I find this very sad. OTOH, Russia can make a fairly valid claim that Crimea is historically more Russian than it is Ukrainian.

When I was over there the popular characterization of Tymishenko was “She’s a very skilled polititian who will steal anything that’s not bolted down — just like your Hillary”. So it’s not surprising that she would cop some sort of deal with Moscow. Che can definitely be bought.

Just great...

The impending Global financial meltdown.

The Bear is reassembling it's Soviet Empire.

America is on the verge of electing a marxist, racist, pro muslim imbecile...

All in all, just another day in Paradise.

She wouldn't look as pretty if the Russian FSB served her a bowl of Dioxin soup like they did to Yushchenko in 2004.

So you're going to give up on the tramp vote just like that? Not me, my friend, not me.

There are people who are surrounded by bigots
and know it is wrong, but are afraid to be vocal against it.
These people are going to pull the lever for Obama
and they are not being polled.

She could carry a couple of precincts in Chicago, I bet. No need to even distribute “walking around money”.
