Police Arrest 81 Looting Suspects After Ike

Houston Police Department FOX 26 News

HOUSTON -- Many felt disgusted after witnessing looting in the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina left thousands of people dead and victimized. Who would steal at a time like this? According to Houston Police Department officials, more than 75 Houstonians and counting.

At least 81 people have been arrested for looting. The crimes have hit several areas of our city as Ike was making landfall and after the monster storm moved out.

"It's very disheartening because there's enough tragedy to infrastructure,...to the act of a theft," Houston Police Department Capt. Bruce Williams said.

So what did they steal during Ike? Officials say everything from furniture to clothes and even liquor.

Council member Adrian Garcia - a former Houston Police Officer-- says the act is disgusting at best.

"This is horrible when mother nature is upon you and is putting your life in danger and you want to be out there trying to steal from someone else it is unfortunate that someone would have that kind of mindset," he said.

Williams says the criminals - the 81 people - Houstonians accused of trying to steal from Houstonians will be dealt with swiftly and with a firm hand.

This was an image Houston frowned upon in New Orleans but now needs to deal with in it's own backyard.

It would be interesting to see if they were originally from New Orleans. Many of those people went to Houston after Katrina.

They would have better off to shoot these criminals dead at the scene of the crime.

That would tend to put a damper on things wouldn’t it?

It would be interesting to read the history behind those laws, how they were circumvented or expunged, along with martial law and other examples of a sane society.

This is why a lot of people refuse to evacuate. They want to stay behind a guard their possessions because they figure otherwise looters will clean out anything worth taking. Its unfortunate that some people choose to put the value of posessions over the value of their lives.

My first thought as well. We have enough problems with the Katrina trash here in GA after that storm. Oh, and thanks Habitat for moving them into a nice (for now) area.

I worked the aftermath of Andrew. You loot; we shoot.

We were without electricity for 70 hours. Got power back about 12 hours ago. It is really, really dark without power. And very scarey in a big city, knowing there are people moving around and not able to see them.

First thing I am going to buy after things settle down is a pair of night-vision binoculars. I don’t ever want to be in that situation again. Being completely in the dark, and not being able to see what is going on in the dark in my neighborhood.

I probably should have a pair as well...in case I’m ever in a tornado
disaster scenario here in FlyOver Country.

There may be better sources, but here a place to start (forgive
the “hugh” URL)

Houston and all the surrounding cities here are still having 9:00 P.M curfews. Probably to keep an eye on these lowlifes. And, no I would not be surprised if some of them are “Katricians”.
