Australians on Sarah Palin: A Hit Down Under

Sarah Palin:
Impressions from Land Down Under

Obama Wowed France, But Australians Like Palin

Palin Down Under

Recently returned from Australia, a DBKP writer had the opportunity to gauge the feelings of the Aussies towards Governor Palin's selection as McCain's Vice-President. The impressions--and that is what they are--were extraordinary.

For context, a little background is necessary. While Australia has the persona of a wilderness, in fact, the vast majority of people are urban--much more so than America.

Nevertheless, they are extremely proud, as well they should be, of their humble, rough-and-tumble beginnings. This continent made early American and Canadian wilderness look hospitable. The Aussies have carved for themselves a wonderful and worthy nation in spite of those beginnings.

But they are Unionists and Socialists for the most part. The Aussies dislike America, despise Bush and Cheney, and the museums hang art ridiculing Reagan and Nixon as if they were still presidents. In fact 30% of Australians under 30 recently selected America as the most dangerous country in the world...to Australians.(huh?)

This bizarre belief is a reflection of academia, Labour politicians and the Aussie MainStream Media, where being anti-American is taken as a sign of intelligence. These challenged souls are convinced the film On The Beach actually happened.

But Aussies have no problem with individual Americans. American companies, or culture, are everywhere. In fact it appears that Americans are emulated--far more than Brits, for example. TV is replete with American shows and (good) copycat shows. Americans are welcomed wherever they go. It is not hard for an American to make friends with the Aussies.

So. How was Palin received?

Incredibly.

At first, the major newspapers were curious. A few stories on how Americans chose someone from the American "outback".

WTF? Do they actually think we're just going to wake up one morning and nuke them?

What the hell is wrong with the rest of the developed world? Sheesh.

Are Americans, who live in Australia, legally allowed to vote in all U.S. elections, and, if they are, how many voting Americans are presently living in Australia?

I think that little tid-bit shows how biased the media is in countries other than the USA...they all seem to tilt mostly left.

But the individual people are a different story.

Thanks for the comment

Probably good old Hollywood, expporting anti-Americanism around the world to people who don't have any real experiance with Americans.

Recently read where 30 percent of the recent South Korean military academy inductees had to be re-educated about the United States and its role in the Korean war. Seems this 30 percent thought the US was the bad guy, and the NorComs were the good guys. The instructors set them straight with education.

When asked where they learned what they didn't know, the reply was "school."

That’s a great observation.

The places the Left are strong are the “dissemination” points: media, education, entertainment.

With American culture popular worldwide, the Left has an audience that isn’t inoculated against MSM Leftie bias.

The answer is in the article...

"This bizarre belief is a reflection of academia, Labour politicians and the Aussie MainStream Media, where being anti-American is taken as a sign of intelligence."

It is likely that a comparable % of your own citizens feel the same way and for the same reason.

Obama's friend Dohrn for example....Greatest purveyor of violence on this earth is my own country....in the belly of the beast...inside the heart of the monster

Whoa....I was born an Australian and am now a proud American!!!

I would ask that you read the WORDS. "In fact 30% of Australians under 30 recently selected America as the most dangerous country in the world...to Australians.(huh?)"

This is just LEFTIST propaganda. Seems to me that the %70 who disagree with this is a massive majority!!!

There are WAY more pro America Australians than even the left ever want you to realize or believe.

We conservatives have been far to lazy in regard to letting the Liberals take over the education system. I would say it must be a psychological thing, because it appears the case in Europe and Australia as well.

I think the real conservative movement might be to actually start recruiting conservatives to go into education and journalism for the good of the country. It is absurd that those two seemingly are 90-10 liberal to conservative.

1. The word is "grouse" not "good"

2. Despite what you learned from Monty Python, not that many Australians are actually called Bruce.

I had figured (2), I didn’t know (1), but it’s a classic comedy routine, and it seemed a shame to fiddle with it.
