The Man Who Programmed Sarah Palin (Pegler heads up)
Gawker ^ | 11 September 2008 | hard to tell from article

Posted on 09/15/2008 7:23:49 PM PDT by Lorianne

Scully wrote the speech [Palin's acceptance speech] largely before Palin was selected. Which makes sense. But the parts that seemed tailored specifically to her? Who wrote those? Specifically, the line about small towns, and how they grow great people? That line, as was revealed this week, was written by a very bigoted columnist named Westbrook Pegler. That line seems like a landmine of unintentional readings: it was written by a racist, about a man who became president when the old man before him died. Not really a single good interpretation there, right?

Well either someone more wacky and right-wing than Scully got a hold of the speech before it was delivered (possible!), or Scully sabotaged her. Hear us out!

Google Palin + Westerbrook Pegler. Heads up!

Why would they choose such an objectionable person to quote from?

If I second this I’m just going to get another rash of troll calls, but whoever decided to quote this man needs to be fired and fired hard. As in kicked off the bus in the middle of nowhere.

The Deranged Left is looking for conspiracies and right wingers under every bed. Don't try to analyze it rationally, because you can't. I don't understand half the things they say anymore!

I rank this “scandal” a few below the tanning bed she had installed.

Troll (since you asked).

This is not a quote from Westbrook Pegler. I've heard and said the same concept in meetings of the Eagle Scout organization in metropolitan Washington, D.C. Small towns DO breed better people.

More people who become Eagle Scouts. More people who become military officers. More people who become business leaders. More people who become Members of Congress (hey, they're not all bad).

This is not only a cheap shot, it's a stupid shot. Try Googling any phrase you want and see how many different sources it seems to come from.

what is the source of the info that pegler authored any of her speech. Actually, much of her’s when accepting sounded like her speeches in Alaska.

Who said???

Everyone loved it, and the nation fell in love with the cheerfully bitchy makeup-plastered trollop.

A line from the *article* linked. Why would I listen to anything this person says?

This is payback for Wright for them. But they’re so full of hate, they can not even see how entirely different Wright and Pfegler are.

Quite an Easter Egg there. Although the line could have been borrowed from someone else who borrowed it from Pegler, unaware of who the original source was from.

At least, unlike Biden, she didn't take credit for that line herself.

ummm, errr, uhhhh, ahhhhh -— maybe Sarah wrote her speech? You cannot read with passion, flair and feeling that she emoted in her speech.

I am not saying the McCain campaign did not give her a framework, they would have almost had to. But she surly filled in the rest.

I remember Reagan is ‘too big a dunce’ to write his own speeches. What a laugher that was.

Question, who writes Obama’s speeches, because when he goes off prompter, he sounds nothing like the reader does when he is reading. Obama is what is known as an actor, not a thinker — And as we sure know we have enough stupid brain dead actors out there in holly-weird to give us all the crap we need.

Has anyone established that the quote actually came from this Pegler character?? (who I had never heard of until just now).... I've heard that quote a number of times through the years and had no idea of the source. Here is the text from Palin's actual speech -- was someone really foolish enough to quote from Pegler or is there another "writer" who used the exact phrase she quoted? btw, she was using the quote to specifically praise Harry Truman, so maybe that should be pointed out now everytime the left screams that there is something "fascist" about the quote. I don't know what Pegler was/is, but the quote itself seems quite innocuous:

A writer observed: "We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty, sincerity, and dignity." I know just the kind of people that writer had in mind when he praised Harry Truman. I grew up with those people."

A harmless quote about small towns read by a woman who is married to a guy who is part Eskimo and has an Israeli flag in her office. Obama is currently pals with an unapologetic terrorist. They are really throwing everything they can at Palin. How dare she attack their precious savior.

Westbrook Pegler has been dead since 1969, so it’d be kind of hard for him to have written her speech. He was however quoted by Scully, the man who did write it, and it was quite foolish of him to do so. The guy was a man of his time, but was nevertheless a fascist sympathizer and a major anti-semite.

Unfortunately, there are more than just this person bringing this up ... including Robert F Kenney Jr.

Pesonally, I’d like some answers about why this quote was in her speech (if it is in fact a direct quote from Pegler).

In any case we should find out the source of the quote and if it is attributable to Pegler, find out why it was in her speech.

Pegler was a respected conservative columnist for many years. Late in life he did become quite bigoted against blacks and Jews. During this time, he abandoned many of his former conservative beliefs, and became a populist of sorts. Respectable papers dropped his column, and he was relegated to being printed in unsavory journals such as those published by Revilo P. Oliver.

To dismiss Pegler as simply a “very bigoted man” is unfair to him.

You do it and get back to me. This sounds like a nothing story written by a rabid antiPalenite. And, when did you start caring what Robt. Kennedy Jr. thinks or says? Here’s a newsflash. He’s a Democrat.

Interesting. I have googled this phrase, “We grow good people in our small towns, with honesty and sincerity and dignity.” I have managed to turn up about a dozen liberal blogs, all foaming at the mouth, who say it was written by the Fascist Westbrook Pegler.

But NOT ONE of them provides an actual reference to this supposed Pegler quotation.

That is ELEMENTARY scholarship. What book, or what article is this quoted from? Where and when was it printed? What page does it appear on?

Sorry, but this seems to be one moonbat echoing another moonbat. Maybe it is a Pegler quote. But I’m not taking the word of any of these moonbats about that, not without some sort of PROOF. They all appear to be screaming the same line, picking it up from each others’ works, like the usual DNC talking points. But . . . .

Where’s the citation? Chapter and verse. Date and page of the newspaper column? Title, publisher, date and page of the book? Nothing that I can find.
