What could have possibly happened to the pipelines?

They flooded?

They blew over like a house of cards?

They were carried away into the firmament? The rapture.

The were burst by the wind and rain. The rupture.

The media needs to be more specific. I have a hard time visualizing how a hurricane could destroy something as heavy as a pipeline. Damaged, maybe, but not destroyed.

If the water was moving enough, the water could cause the pipe to break in one or several places. Enough movement might even cause the pipeline to be displaced and hard to find. Fixing a broken pipe on the ocean floor isn't an easy exercise.
