In the wake of Sarah Palin, John McCain has opened up a 15-point lead among independents, according to a new Gallup Poll and Barack Obama has a real problem.

To reconnect with independent voters, Obama needs to hammer home that a Republican victory would reward the kind of right-wing partisan hackery embodied by Monica Goodling, the Justice Department aide who acknowledged "crossing the line" in questioning prospective hires about their political beliefs...Hey! Now there's a plan for zerObama!
Run against Monica Goodling!
That oughta wrap up the election nice and tight!
Go, zerO, go!
This could be very significant. It’s going to be the independents and moderate/centrist voters who decide this election. If people in the middle are going so strongly for McCain/Palin, then Obama/Biden are in big trouble.
The polls are still close, but the trends are clear. I am not dreaming of a landslide, but am cautiously optimistic.
Wait, wait, in the immortal words of each and every Lib TV talking head: “Take a deep breath. These polls are meaningless...” Repeat as often as necessary. (They are so in the tank it’s sickening.)
A lot of independents are conservative. I guess the writer of this article doesn’t understand.
It is interesting what happens when you put a real conservative on the ticket. It proves Rush and Ann right when they have said time and again that it would only take a real conservative to wake this country up to the level of 1980. I wanted to believe it, but I had serious doubts. It was beginning to look like the “Reagan Revolution” was watered down and disappearing. From all we are seeing with the addition of Gov. Palin and the resulting euphoric enthusiasm injected into the campaign, “Rush is right” yet again.

>>>Three words: IT’S OVER, BABY!
No, it ain’t over. Not by a long shot. It ain’t gonna be over ‘til Olberman & Chrissy M. consoling one another on election night.
Is this a new Gallup poll today, or is he analyzing the week old one?

Not a universal rule, certainly, but I think there a lot of truth in this.

This is a perfect example of journalists being irresponsible with polls. It is one poll and analyzing one poll too much is never smart. Since it is the USAToday/Gallup poll and one of the most respected it has driven news coverage immensely.
This has worked great for McCain as it has painted his convention and especially the pick of Palin as major successes at a critical time for Palin. If we had seen bad polling after the Palin pick the media would have declared Palina disaster and a Quayle pick. Luckily, they have to at least concede the point that policitally she has been a good pick while they try to destroy her.
But a responsible journalist would take all the polls into account and tine down the rhetoric. When the next USAToday/Gallup poll comes out and is more in line with reality it may very well turn the press coverage. And they will find any negative aspect of the McCain campaign and link it up further driving negative news coverage for McCain.
So are we soon going to see Obama out hunting in camoflauge?
This is serious business folks. We came way too close to having John Kerry as a President in 2004.
Obama: He could have been great, but he wasn’t very good.
Most self-described “moderates” will be won over by sincere, principled conservatives every single time. Republicans will not win votes by qualifying themselves as being “compassionate” or by being more like ‘Rats. McCain himself admitted it by saying “we lost our way”. Republicans win votes by being more Republican. Call it the “Palin Effect”.
