Consumed with cleanliness? (implications on physical and mental health)
BayNews9 ^ | 09/14/2008

Health Team 9 Psychologist, Dr. Steve O'Brien says new research suggests being consumed with cleanliness can have implications on physical and mental health.

Dr. O'Brien says cleanliness is definitely healthy, but the more obsessed someone is with 'grime fighting,' the more likely the immune system is being weakened. He says a weakened immune system can mean people are more likely to get sick, have more problems with allergies and asthma. He says a weakened immune system can also trigger more problems psychologically like anxiety and depression.

I decided years ago that I could either be a clean freak or have a life. I chose the latter.

My wife does. We buy bottle of rubbing alcohol to clean the house.

If you take clothes out of the dryer and something falls on the floor it's supposed to be rewashed. (I don't)

There is a long list but it's to depressing to list.

Anti bacterial soap is something you should TOSS!

Let your immune system handle it.

Use regular soap and water.

The obsession with anti bacterial soaps is an example of what I believe is being expressed here.

It is amazing what the “good” microbes and microbial ecosystems on our skin, in out nose, mouth, intestinal track, etc. do and many people just ignorantly “zap” these good guys. They are there for a purpose. Do not use things like antibacterial soap constantly.

I do not have this problem.

Me, neither. And it's reassuring to know that my family is better off for it.

Neither have I, i’ve consumed massive quantities of just about everything that these modern day whackos say will make you sick or give you cancer and I haven’t been sick in the last 63 years.

The last time was when I had the measels when I was 8.

My dad grew up during the depression. His family would have been poor even if there hadn’t been a depression. Needless to say, the hygiene was very primitive. My dad is 78 and has chronic health issues but he rarely gets sick from viruses or bacteria. I believe he could survive anthrax and smallpox.

How about the “chain of custody” for feet, socks, and slippers before getting into bed? One slip up and everything had to be changed and washed.

That was _one_ of the rules from an ex.

I have a friend whose wife has literally scrubbed the counter tops so much that it created dips and holes. They had to replace counter tops recently. She has also scrubbed the enamel off her teeth. Is that sick? I say, YES!

I have another friend that suffers (she does not think so) from disposophobia. When in her house, the only way to walk around is to twist and turn you shoulders to keep from knocking boxes over that are stacked to the ceilings.

Has some disease killed her yet, those are the kinds of people that catch everything and die young!

Close. She has a pair of slippers in the basement that are not allowed up the stairs. I get grief all the time about my feet.

I once rinsed the strainer after making noodles. To get the water out of it I tapped it on the sink on its edge. Dirty now. Had to be rewashed.

I have to cut her some slack. She is a nurse and is exposed to some pretty creepy germs at work. It's a carry over.

I once went to pick up a prescription. You know how they make you sign for it? I used the pen and then asked for some Purell. She didn't have any at the counter. I kept asking till they got some. Think about it. Every one who is sick is using that same pen to sign for their prescriptions. Some time anti-bacterials are needed.

I see that as, ahem ... idiotic.

You could say that you need Purell for going food shopping too. At our food store they have wipes at the cart area to use on your hands. Anything has germs on it. Cart handles have germs on it. Sick and healthy people use the carts. We still ONLY use soap and water. We want strong immune systems. By using anti bacterial soaps your own immune system is weakened.

We just don’t agree.

Not agreeing is not the same as calling me idiotic.

I remember now why I don't post to you much anymore.
