Sarah Palin, man magnet: McCain's veep pick is attracting men who backed Hillary & uniting GOP

Fifty-seven percent of men believe Palin is qualified to be vice president, compared with only 43 percent of women.

Republican John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate was intended to lure women voters, but it's the guys who are actually getting hooked, new polls show.

One CNN survey this week found that 62% of men have a favorable opinion of Palin - nine points higher than women.

Similarly, 57% of men believe Palin is qualified to be vice president, compared with only 43% among women.

The numbers underscore what many experts have surmised since the get-go: that the 44-year-old mother of five's selection was aimed less at ardent women supporters of Sen. Hillary Clinton - who are ideologically opposite to the conservative Palin - and more at the white, moderate working-class men who also supported the former first lady's candidacy.

"I think in some ways Palin does help go after the Hillary voter, but a lot of people confuse that to think it is just women," said John McIntyre, co-founder of RealClear Politics, a Web site that tracks presidential polling.

"It's not just women - it is white, working-class voters in general," said McIntyre. "And I am sure that when the McCain team was looking at the pros and cons, those male Hillary voters were every bit on their mind as women."

The man-surge for Palin is inspiring observations on both sides of the aisle, from the blogger who dubbed her a "right-wing redneck fantasy girl" to feminist Gloria Steinem's comment that "Palin shares nothing but a chromosome" with Clinton.

But Palin's allure may have a lot more to do with class and ideology than gender, pollsters say.

Keating Holland, CNN's director of polling, noted that men in general tend to tilt Republican, while women lean Democratic.

"So I'm not sure that men are responding to anything other than she has an R - for Republican - after her name," said Holland. "I think partisanship is driving everything here, and if you are Republican you look at her and say, 'Yay!'"

Other polls seem to confirm that Palin's real allure is in her ability to unite the GOP's conservative base, male and female.

One Rasmussen Survey found that 79% of conservatives have a favorable impression of Palin, a figure that drops to 43% among moderates. Likewise, conservatives are twice as likely as moderates to think she is qualified to be President, and five times more likely than liberals.

She certainly has plenty of new fans, judging by the throngs of men and women that have turned up at Palin campaign stops in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and the other mostly rural swing states where she has stumped.

"She's just an amazing woman for the Republican Party," enthused Ted DiBenedetto, 41, of Centreville, Va., at a rally in nearby Fairfax. "She's a hunter, she's a fisherman, she's a reformer, she's got executive experience, and she's run her state national guard.

"I was actually a non-McCain supporter," DiBenedetto said. "When he picked Sarah, that unified the Republican Party."

Not surprising at all. It is actually well known that many women do not like women that are better looking than themselves; it makes them feel insecure.

"...feminist Gloria Steinem's comment that "Palin shares nothing but a chromosome" with Clinton. "

You mean like bill shared some of his chromosomes with Monica?

True dat. Every woman who is with a man wonders if she's beautiful enough for him. Female jealousy is something you don't want to meet. Trust me on it! (laughing)

The MSM just think McCain chose her to attract Hillary supporters. She is a woman, and Hillary is a woman, therefore McCain must be trying to get woman voters. They just don't think deeper than that.

Other polls seem to confirm that Palin's real allure is in her ability to unite the GOP's conservative base, male and female.

It's funny how we told them why we like her, and they don't believe it. Then when the polling data shows them, they still have a hard time accepting it.

My husband said all the democrat old men at the barber shop last week were praising Sarah Palin, and will be voting for the McCAin-Palin ticket.

All my lady friends as well as myself intend to vote for Sarah. She’s awesome and a breath of fresh air compared to the Messiah who represents a breath of sewer.

What is it that the alleged 21% (if it really exists) doesn't like?

Almost every normal woman is better looking than most radical “feminist leaders”. What particularly irks them about Palin is that she is so much more accomplished than any of them. She has a family (rather than aborting her children to further her career) — and she already has one of the top political jobs in the country. Palin has it all & that just makes the bitter feminazis realize how meaningless their life has been, and will continue to be.

Do I really want to be on the side of men that backed Hillary? Is there something about Palin I should know?

62% of men have a favorable opinion of Palin - nine points higher than women.

That works out to about 58% of people in general.

79% of conservatives have a favorable impression of Palin, a figure that drops to 43% among moderates.

So the conservatives who were iffy about McCain are on board, along with a fair number of cross-over Democrats. The folks who don't like her likely weren't going to vote McCain anyway.

We might be looking at a landslide.

I don't know how they decided who was conservative, moderate, or liberal. If they used self selection then so called moderates will be predominately Democratic because Americans are more comfortable identifying themselves as conservative rather than liberal.

I agree it should be a landslide, but the Media is in Obama’s pocket doing his dirty work.

These subpoena's of Todd Palin are being dished out by a Alaska State Senator and Obama supporter , Hollis French.

French needs to be discredited and nailed by the RNC.

We have the Bradley Effect, they have the Media.

"It's not just women - it is white, working-class voters in general," said McIntyre. "And I am sure that when the McCain team was looking at the pros and cons, those male Hillary voters were every bit on their mind as women."

The beautiful thing is the vast majority of the remaining undecided voters fall into this category as well.

If they simply break even, we keep our lead. If they split in favor of McPalin, which seems likely, we could be looking at a comfortable victory.

At this point, I think we are still looking at a close election, but if things break just right, 350+ EVs are not out of the question.

What is disgusting is that segment of women that have always yapped about empowering this, empowering that, equal pay for equal work, yakyakyakyak and then when an honest-to-God qualified woman candidate emerges, then we see them jumping OFF the wagon like fleas being hit with Raid(tm).

Typical snarky crap. Well ladies, Gov. Palin is showing this old man something about leadership too and I’m sure a lot of other men as well and I have no problem with pulling that lever (actually in our small rural area, penciling in the box on paper ballots) for McCain/Palin and for the sake of my seven grandDAUGHTERS, grandpa is going to show them that he too walks the walk, not just yaps and he will hold up the example of Gov. Sarah Palin as an example to follow.

My husband is crazy about her. I think her appeal is not simply her obvious, considerable beauty but that she’s so very COOL.

Obama said recently (and insipidly) that he wants to make government “cool” again. Sorry, Barry, the Governor beat you to it.
