WASHINGTON: Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives attacked a Democratic offshore drilling plan Friday for including a 50-mile coastal buffer that they said would leave untouched most of the 18 billion barrels of oil in waters now off-limits to energy companies.
A Democratic drilling proposal expected to be taken up by the House next week would allow energy development access to waters 50 to 100 miles from shore along almost all the country's coastlines as long as a coastal state agrees to drilling off its shores.
Waters off Florida's Gulf coast and a nationwide 50-mile coastal buffer would remain out of bounds to energy companies.
House Republican Leader John Boehner called the plan a "hoax on the American people," arguing that nearly 90 percent of the oil believed to be in the restricted offshore waters still would not be available.
House Republicans are recommending removal of offshore drilling bans everywhere with no protected buffer.

Who didn’t see this one coming...
It should remind us of AlGore’s platform of “targeted tax cuts” - it was nothing more than a social engineering version of Twister with a tax credit at the end of each round.
Democrats will authorize offshore drilling as soon a they have identified all of the sites where no oil exists.
Tell Harry Reid to shut off the lights in DC if he wants because we are fighting to keep the lights on in America!
Those f'n' scumbags are at it again! Maybe it's time to gather the bitter people, with their Bibles and Pitchforks, and hold a march on Pelosi Reid and the Gang of RINOs. I at least will be calling those I can reach on Monday. Grrrrr !!
......they just don’t want to be bothered by the sight of those ugly oil rig.....
I spent several evenings on the Corniche, the grassy park that runs along the beach in Al Khobar Saudi Arabia. At twilight the twinkling light of the gas being flared from the off shore wells become visible. It is really a beautiful and magical sight. The families who come there to enjoy the twilight didn’t seem to mind at all.
These wells are not at all in sight during the daytime.
Yes they are at it again. The good thing is that most of those in the Senate have signed on to letting the Drilling ban expire. I don’t really think we have a problem in the House and God help the Gang of “16” in the Senate if they decide to offer cover to the liberals. This isn’t about getting any bill it is about freeing up energy exploration. This issue alone is poised to defeat the Democrats in congress. We have an opportunity for another 1994. The effect of Palin on down stream races and the amount of enthusiasm of conservatives and ground troops and the amount of anger at the Democrat controlled congress could not be higher.
This is not something we can throw away because this isn’t about parties it is about getting REAL energy reform not even bigger energy bureaucracy and calling it reform.
Those Saudi families know that those oil rigs are their prosperity.
Which is a concept that is completely antithetical to the radical Fabian Socialists/Communists/Progressives (all fingers of the same iron glove of oppression) of the US Democratic party elite, and their fellow travelers in the media, classrooms, and union halls.
