Glen Campbell: Galveston, oh Galveston!
YouTube.com, CowboyLyrics.com | 1968, 1969 | Jimmy Webb & Glen Campbell

Posted on 09/12/2008 10:56:24 PM PDT by KayEyeDoubleDee

Was staring at this radar image from Weather.com:

And got to thinking of Glen Campbell:

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea winds blowin'
I still see her dark eyes glowin'
She was 21 when I left Galveston

Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear your sea waves crashing
While I watch the cannons flashing
I clean my gun and dream of Galveston

I still see her standing by the water
Standing there lookin' out to sea
And is she waiting there for me?
On the beach where we used to run

Galveston, oh Galveston, I am so afraid of dying
Before I dry the tears she's crying
Before I watch your sea birds flying in the sun
At Galveston, at Galveston

Here's an upbeat version, with lots of vintage pictures of 1960's Galveston [it's a little clipped at the beginning & the end, and the volume is a little loud]:

Here's the same version, in color, with lower volume [although the video quality is not as good as the black & white version]:

And here's a nice, soft, slow version of Galveston, with full orchestral accompaniment [which might be the most appropriate, given that Galveston won't exist in the morning]:

BTW, was going through the Glen Campbell hits at YouTube, and found this gorgeous old rendition of "Wichita Lineman":

I am a lineman for the county.
And I drive the mainroad.
Searchin' in the sun for another overload.

I hear you singing in the wire.
I can hear you thru the whine.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

I know I need a small vacation.
But it don't look like rain.
And if it snows that stretch down south,
won't ever stand the strain.

And I need you more than want you.
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

And I need you more than want you.
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita Lineman,
Yes he's still on the line...

Somehow I don’t think Glen would appreciate his music being exploited due to Hurricane Ike.

But you get the MKJ Prime Award for Cheesiest Post, so congratulations.

Thanks for posting this. That song has been running through my head the last several days in anticipation of Ike.

I don’t think Glen would mind at all.

Thanks for the post. Great songs.

It’s getting harder and harder to find good songs like this on the radio. I heard “Galveston” the other day on a Stardust station (WFNT) while traveling through, and thought, what a great song. If you like this kind of music, you might try to find a Stardust station online. WFNT is not online.

Don’t forget to credit Jimmy Webb, the songwriter of “Galveston” and “Wichita Lineman.” Two of the all-time great country songs, IMO.

LOL, ol' Glen looks like he was surfing the waves in Galveston last night.

Hey, counting this post, this thread has a grand whopping total of 10 responses.

That ought to tell the originator something, lol
