Edwards Affair: Did Elizabeth Know More?
FOX News ^ | Tuesday, September 09, 2008 | Roger Friedman

How much did Elizabeth Edwards, John Edwards’ wife, know about his affair with Rielle Hunter and when did she know it?

Edwards has said that he told his wife about the affair “at the end of 2006” and that everything ended after that.

Indeed, within days of the end of 2006, Web videos produced by Hunter about Edwards disappeared from his campaign Web site and from YouTube.

Sources tell me that it was indeed Elizabeth Edwards who had the videos pulled down when she saw them. The theory among Edwards campaign insiders is that she finally put two and two together. “She realized this blonde woman who was always around and who made these videos, there was something going on," a source said.

In fact, Hunter and her videos disappeared, only to be replaced by new videos made by a videographer who’d worked for Elizabeth Edwards’ brother, Jay Anania. Peter Cairns had worked for Anania on a project called Commedia and a video called “The Lost Hours.”

In a chapter added to the paperback edition of Edwards’ memoir, "Saving Graces," the former senator’s wife observes that in 2007: “My brother Jay had a wonderful young man, Peter Cairns, who worked for him, and Peter had begun videotaping the campaign, the events and behind the scenes. We had tried it before but the process of getting the film from the camera to the internet — where I and the public could watch John took much too long.”

(An e-mail and a phone call to Cairns on Monday were each unreturned.)

Of course, that wasn’t the case. When Hunter shot her videos, sources tell me, a dedicated Internet technician was part of the deal, and managed to get all her videos up on Edwards’ campaign site immediately.

Elizabeth Edwards,

IMHO, Elizbeth Edwards knew all, and put political ambition before honor. In that regard, she’s no different than Hillary Rotten.

anyone who has watched the one on the plane can tell there is something unusually comfortable about Edwards body language in the interview. He pulls up his leg, exposing himself (no fig leaf) if you know what i mean. Most guys don’t do that around strangers, no matter their level of arrogance...;)

John Edwards told ABC’s Bob Woodruff that he only commenced his affair with Hunter when his wife’s cancer was in remission.

Oh...I see. That's makes it all okay. When first confronted, he denied everything...proving he's a liar. Once the evidence couldn't be swept under the carpet any more, he convinced his wife that her meal ticket depended upon her going along with his "full disclosure" position offered to the press and how she and God forgave him. Really? If Edward's put all of this behind him two years ago and the affair is over, how does he explain the five hours he spent in her hotel this summer? How stupid does he think we are?

She had the honed instincts to recognize something was already going on with Hunter.

I have a feeling Liz honed these skills through years of Edwards’ cheating.

Even if she knew all, what was Elizabeth supposed to do? Go public with what was surely very painful and embarrassing information about her husband’s infidelity? It was the job of the DNC and the campaign staff to vet Edwards’ personal life for any potential political fallout. They failed miserably in their due diligence. You shouldn’t put the burden of ratting out John Edwards on his wife.

What an incredibly rude subject. She’s dying. Her husband just fathered a baby with another woman. And the press is obsessing on what she knew and when she knew it? Shame on them.

Do. Not. Rip. Elizabeth.

Look, she adores her children. She has PRECIOUS little time left with them. And little children need their mother desperately. If there were a divorce, Edwards would get at least part-time custody of them and she would be deprived of them for those hours and days. Every hour she has with them COUNTS, to her.

Why do you think she homeschools them? She wants to be with them. Nothing else matters to her. She will do what Edwards says, because she wants to be with her little children.

STOP knocking her decisions and think about a dying woman wanting to be with her children every day, every hour. Good L-rd, have some decency. I’d be exactly the same as her: go ahead, Jerk of Jerks, do whatever you want with your floozy, but do not take my kids away from their Mommy; that will happen soon enough...

I put some of the burden on her because she actively played a prominent role in promoting her husband’s “Family Man of the Year” charade. She was hardly a bystander in her husband’s campaign; in fact, she was, for all intents and purposes, her husband’s spokesman. If she’s going to play politics, she has to be able to take the heat...ditto for Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain.

I don't see why Fox deems it necessary to dig into Elizabeth Edwards. She's dying.

I mean, I know Fox loves sensationalistic yellow journalism, but give the woman some peace.

I think she knew all about it all along. I also think she knew Edwards was a serial adulterer. The people on this thread whining about “poor Elizabeth” seem to have forgotten how she exploited her cancer to help her husband’s campaign.

She's been dying an awful long time now, and she still looks plump. You sure this wasn't a scam too, to get sympathy votes, while the philanderer was still in the running?

The difference may have been Elizabeth had another couple years to live why start a divorce.

It’s stage IV, spread to rib and lung. That’s not good at all. I doubt seriously that it’s a hoax.

“If she’s going to play politics, she has to be able to take the heat ...”

I certainly agree with that. But the article is about how much (and when) Elizabeth knew about Edwards’ infidelity, with the implication being that she had an obligation to the DNC and the Edwards campaign to provide them with painful and embarrassing information about her husband’s indiscretions. She was his wife and political partner - not a PI. Rumors about Edwards’ affair had been circulating for a long time. That Edwards’ supporters and staff didn’t check the smoke to see if there was a fire is their fault - not hers.

Yes, I had read that and thought it was very, very nice. I don’t agree with her politics but I completely understand how she feels as a mother, and thank G-d I am not in her horrible position. I really feel for her. Edwards... well, I wish he were hanging out with Geraldo about now...
