Charlie Gibson's Attempt to Twist Sarah Palin's Words

Hubris was indeed revealed in the ABC interview with Sarah Palin, and it wasn't coming from Sarah Palin, but Charlie Gibson. But there was more than Charlie's sneering condescending tone, looking down over the rim of his glasses like some snobby intellectual that bothered me. Twisting her words into a fabrication feeding the fear of theocracy was utterly insulting. It was especially insulting to claim that these were her "exact words" after being challenged on it. Watch this video excerpt from the interview to see the exchange.

Here is the transcript of the exchange:

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, “Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.” Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don’t know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln’s words when he said — first, he suggested never presume to know what God’s will is, and I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words.

But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.

That’s what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln’s words, but you went on and said, “There is a plan and it is God’s plan.”

Actually, Charlie, that is totally untrue. Here is what she actually said:

“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan.”

Here is a tip for the future Charlie. Try not to rely on the AP for your "exact quotes". It makes you look like a total fool, especially after condescendingly insisting you are correct.

When he tells her "it takes some hubris" to think she's qualified . . . I was like, wtf?!?!?! Yes Charlie, it takes HUBRIS for the little Alaskan girl to dare think she can handle a big important job!

Sadly, most people will hear what they wanted to hear of this interview. We can only hope there are enough clear thinking folks left in this country to see through the marxist fog.

So Gibson intentionally, and maliciously it seems, short quoted Gov Palin?

If Gibson had a conscience, he should be ashamed of himself. He doesn’t and he isn’t. However, God is not mocked.

You are correct.

Some liberal weenie editor (and I know many of them) thought he/she would be really clever with the jump cuts. I didn’t see the whole interview, but I bet they cut to her several times while she wasn’t saying anything...makes her look uncomfortable and nervous.

From the text.

.....looking down over the rim of his glasses like some snobby intellectual.....

I am glad that that scenario was aptly described. My liberal spouse had the interview on. Older man that I am, I nearly lost it. "Dinosaur" I shouted. "You old, old man". Older myself though, by a long margin, I noticed this in one brief side view , Gibson looked like an old fashioned blunderbuss from the Charles Dickens era. I was told to shhssh. I did and felt much better. For the woman, one word, irrespective of any political comment.

Bravo!

It will be very interesting to see if Gibson tries to pull more of this stuff today.

That doctoring of the “God’s will” quote was malicious and deceptive. It defies belief to think that Charlie Gibson was not aware that he was working off half a quote.

You are correct.

And I’m almost certain that the reaction shots they used were taken from different questions than the ones that were on the voice over.

They inserted reactions that made her look like she was confused by the question.

It looked like something that a community access channel would be embarrassed to put on the air.

Some women may not want to believe this, but there are many mechanics who tend to talk down to everyone, not just women. As a man, I’ve gotten the same vibe from them. It’s part of their ‘just shut up and let me do what I want to so I can bill you for it” strategy. That is not to say that there aren’t sexist mechanics out their, just that women may be hypersensitive to the attitude.

Pray "THAT" there is a plan and pray "THAT" God is on our side, Charlie... "THAT". Staple "THAT" to your forehead you smarmy bastard.

The drivetime dj talkshow guy, michael smerconish, was whining about Palin's comment on this subject. Like Charlie, he didn't get it. smeconish also went on to say that Lincoln never said such a thing. He's wrong, but he would never admit it.

I don’t think the media gets it —
that they’re the ones being scrutinized, and not the ones they think they are inquisitioning (manipulating), because the public “gets” it more than they do.

So now they all kind of look like pathetic copycats of the Jerry Springer (Keith Olbermann, etc.) style of self-importance, while everybody at home watching (and in the studios too) are laughing their heads off at such pretentious presumptuousness.

But, O, here comes Mr. Bombastic himself. We must fall down and worship.

As a woman, I can tell you that your wife is not alone. Nearly every female in America works or has worked for a man who takes this exact tone and posture with them in front of others. They do it because they feel threatened.

Sarah stood right up to him and never flinched. She belittled the gasbag with many “Charlies” while maintaining her aura. I hate to get into those liberal terms...but there is just some wonderful indefinable quality that radiates from her. Let the libs try, they can’t rattle her enough to force something ugly to surface, God didn’t make her that way.

I think you've hit on something that needs to be repeated. It was the tone of a car mechanic talking down to a woman; a woman that he knows or thinks that he getting ready to take to the cleaners.

I'm a man and I've heard that tone before at an oil change place. The "technician" talked this young lady into going with the Super Synthetic Oil Change that was $80.00 and then went out into the service bay and started laughing about it. Of course everyone in the waiting room could hear him.

Yes, I did my chivalrous deed and gave the punk a piece of my mind. He apologized to the young lady and did the regular oil change.

I’d bet his ratings will drop sharply after the Gov Palin interviews. She probably propped his ratings for this week.

The most startling conclusions come when you listen to Gibson’s interview with 0bama on similar subjects (being qualified, etc.)

My fantasy scenario is that Sarah Palin pulls a printed copy of her “God’s Will” quote out of a briefcase and hands it to Charlie Gibson and asks him to read the highlighted portion. She can then ask him if he thinks he was fair in the way he characterized her quote yesterday.

I can just hear it. After Charlie stammers and stutters, she can remind him that he repeated his error, and claimed that he was using her “exact words”.

Well, here are the exact words, Charlie. All of them. Are you malicious or are you a moron? Pick One. (Or Both, if you prefer)

Better yet, she can just print out the copy in 18-point type, highlight the relevant portion, and leave it sitting on the desk for Gibson to see, with a penciled note on the margin that she has another copy of this in her pocket.

Let him walk his own butt back over the line.

Actually, I think it’s a good thing that people will hear what they want to hear from this interview.

This is a highly polarized election.

So, the ones who hated Palin to begin with, still hate her.

The ones who loved Palin before the interview, still love her.

So, with the drastic shift in the polls recently, the most important thing is that the interview didn’t cause a significant number of people to switch from McCain/Palin to Barry’s communist party.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/weblogs/TWSFP/2008/09/what_exactly_is_the_bush_doctr.asp

The writer of that blog, Richard Starr, did not include a link to ABCNEWS, but wrote “Consider what a diversity of views on the meaning of the Bush Doctrine can be found simply within the archives of ABC News itself” and went on to list several quotes from Gibson and others.
