McCain Blows It - Defends Obama's Community Organizer Record (Goes After The Moderate Vote Alert)
Michelle Malkin.com ^ | 9/11/2008 | Michelle Malkin

You know, I was going to call it a night. And then I saw the story about John McCain’s appearance at the 9/11 Columbia University forum earlier this evening.

Every time you grit your teeth and defend this guy, he pulls something like this. Hey, Maverick: Way to throw Sarah Palin, Rudy Giuliani, and your strategists who had the sense to seize on Obama’s abysmal, ineffectual record as a Chicago rabble-rouser under the bus!

Criiiiiikey:

Barack Obama and John McCain attempted to set their differences aside Thursday night, if only for a moment, as they encouraged Americans to volunteer in their community and military at a forum on national service.

Few sparks flew at the Columbia University event, hosted by ServiceNation. The candidates — who were interviewed separately — were encouraged to keep campaign politics to a minimum, out of respect for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks.

In that spirit, McCain at one point softened the language used by his running mate last week at the Republican National Convention, where she mocked Obama’s early days as a community organizer.

“Governor Palin was responding to the criticism of her inexperience, her job as a mayor in a small town,” McCain explained. “Of course I respect community organizers. Of course I respect people who’ve served their communities, and Senator Obama’s record there is outstanding.”

“Outstanding?”

Are you kidding me? Does McCain need talking points on the government-subsidized fraud machine that is ACORN? Here are the ACORN Watch archives: Print and read.

Does McCain even know about the Annenberg Challenge disaster? Someone set up a briefing for him with Stanley Kurtz, stat! Is he even aware of Obama’s own disavowal of his failed community organizer efforts?

McCain has just taken one of his own campaign’s most effective lines of attack against his opponent’s feckless, far Left past and tossed it away — like the rose Obama flung in the water.

What’s next? Will McCain attack those who mock Obama’s “outstanding” community organizer record as racist, too?

Banging. Head. Against. Wall.

***

Hey, let’s put some salt in the wound: A cabinet position for Obama to boot!

Maybe he’ll be named Secretary of the Soros Slush Fund.

I actually thought McCain handled things pretty well tonight, given the theme of the forum. He put the blame for the negative tone of the campaign on Obama’s campaign and defended Palin while giving kudos to Obama’s work in the community.

Folks, there’s a time for everything. Tonite was not the night to attack. I have no problem with what McCain said. Let him play the ‘good cop’ - and let the ‘attack’ line come from somewhere else on this day.

Sounds like 100% purist Michelle is at it again. There wasn't this much reaction to it on the live thread, for crying out loud.

Unrelated note - I am watching the History Channel "120 Minutes" or whatever it is called. I feel like I am going to hurl. Bad.

He was blowing it out of his exhaust stack for the sake of the votes of people who aren’t like you or me.

And its not about you.

I don’t care if McCain goes after the moderate vote. In fact, he probably needs to if he wants to win. HOWEVER, praising Obama’s service as “community organizer” isn’t going to do it. How is praising the opponent going to persuade someone to vote for him?

Reverse psychology. Done properly, it can be an effective way of unblocking cognitive dissonance.

The problem lies in these lines:
“...and Senator Obama’s record there is outstanding.”

Ms. Malkin went on to qualify her criticism of this outlandish exaltation by sighting the Annenberg Challenge as well as ACORN.

Ms. Malkin has a point, and it is true that Senator McCain undercuts speeches made by his VP pick as well as other conservative politicians when he uses such flattery.

It is true, gswilder, when you say that keeping the community organizer issue in the news will make Obama look less experienced. But when you have Senator McCain saying that Obama was an “outstanding” organizer, this certainly is food the liberal press will jump all over and use against the McCain/Palin campaign. As a matter of fact, Sen. McCain as well as Gov. Palin can no longer use the “community organizer” example without having to address McCain's “outstanding” description of Obama. (((Frown)))

And yet, we must continue to move forward. And with the propaganda media outlits continuous attack on Gov. Palin, the liberals are making it easy for this country to decide.

“Governor Palin was responding to the criticism of her inexperience, her job as a mayor in a small town,” McCain explained. “Of course I respect community organizers. Of course I respect people who’ve served their communities, and Senator Obama’s record there is outstanding including Senator Obama.”

I agree with your comment, however, a simple "including Senator Obama" would have been sufficient, imo, without the superfluous "outstanding record" comment by Senator McCain.

I agree that tonight was a night for reflection on the day 9-11 and a moratorium on slinging Shiite.

I love Michelle and agree with her about 99% of the time but this is one time I think McCain did the right thing.

McCain took the high road of a statesman and left Obama to wallow in his pig sty.

If I ever got into a barroom fight Michelle would be a welcomed addition to my puny defense.

“He’s our Trojan Horse for future President Palin.”

Yes and that is what the general public and moderates really are thinking. Not if she will run, but when she runs.

It hurts little to let him have his “hands across the aisle moments as long as we get a chance to move on from right now.

Palin as VP is quite a step and gives a feeling of security to many moderates and RINO’s. They do not pay attention to all this as we do.

McCain did not shut off any chance to run the "community organizer" dagger through at a later date.

he majored in race baiting...literally though they called it international relations

and Obama has never managed anything besides a Senate office for 143 days

I bet Michelle the linebacker mom runs that house.

He can win the insult contest, I’ll settle for McCain/Palin in the WH

Exactly. I can't believe the people on this thread who seem to think it would be real cool for McCain to diss Obama at a solemn event at Ground Zero.

However, I also think three-quarters of those people on this thread are trolls.

Actually, I don’t think he blew it when taken in context of how vicious the left has been towards Governor Palin, and especially in light of obama’s lipstick on a pig remark the other day.

McCain, is taking the high road while the left continues to swim in the gutter.

“McCain did not shut off any chance to run the “community organizer” dagger through at a later date”

Yep. Other people will do this, in subtle and unsubtle ways.

McCain may even express shock and dismay at the indecorous turns the campaign has taken.

“Let him play the ‘good cop’ - and let the ‘attack’ line come from somewhere else on this day.”

Rudy did a real good job of just that on Hannity tonight. He said, “I’d like to know what his community service entails” and mentioned his unflattering protege who got him into community organizing.

There’s more than meets the eye on this story, and Rudy and McCain know it.

How is praising the opponent going to persuade someone to vote for him?

This is called civility.
