Fired Muslim workers plan 'low-profile' day

About 100 Muslim workers fired Wednesday by JBS Swift & Co. in Greeley planned a “low-profile” day today in recognition of the victims of the 9-11 massacre seven years ago, according to one of the workers’ leaders.
Kaise Egal, who hasn’t worked at Swift but is a leader of the local Muslim workers, said the fired workers were staying low-key “in respect to the 9-11 victims.”
“We told the people to be low-profile and not to demonstrate,” Egal said in a phone interview. “That’s why we didn’t do the walk (on Monday) from the (downtown Greeley) park to the Swift facility.”
The weeklong dispute between the Muslim workers at JBS Swift flared Wednesday with about 100 workers receiving termination notices when they reported to the plant in mid-afternoon for the late shift.
JBS Swift management said the firings were due to the employees violating the union contract by walking off the job without authorization Friday evening.
The Muslim workers claim they were trying to break for prayers at about 7:30 p.m. in accordance with an agreement made with the company.
JBS Swift officials, meanwhile, said the agreement was a compromise made between Muslim and non-Muslim workers to change the mid-shift break from about 9:15 p.m. to 8 p.m.
They said they warned the workers who walked out Friday night they would be terminated if they didn’t return to work for their Tuesday shifts. About 120 Muslim workers returned Tuesday, but another 100 or so didn’t. Those were the ones who were fired Wednesday afternoon.
The fired workers are now planning legal action and representatives United Food Commercial Workers Local 7 say the union will file grievances on behalf of the fired workers, if the workers seek that support.
Manny Gonzales, spokesman for UFCW Local 7, said Wednesday he was “shocked” by the firings and felt the company didn’t give enough notice that the workers’ jobs were in jeopardy.
“There might be some who just chose not to go back (Tuesday), but we think they majority just didn’t get enough notice,” he said.
Egal said the fired workers planned to go as a group to the local unemployment office Friday. The workers also plan to meet on the weekend to talk with a lawyer.
Linda Perez, division head of Employment Services of Weld County, said Wednesday that the office for several years has worked with JBS Swift on filling labor needs. She said company representatives regularly conduct interviews and process applications at the employment services office at 1551 N. 17th Ave.
In past years, Perez said, JBS Swift has periodically increased recruitment efforts through the office. However, as of Wednesday morning she hadn’t noticed any stepped-up processing of applications during the current dispute with Muslim workers.

The idiotic this is that many of these workers probably fled their homeland due to the conditions created by this Islam over Everything attitude where sharia law trumps secular law, where shifts are supposed to shift with the sunrise and sunset, where holidays are moveable depending on moon phases. Serious businesses will not cope with that kind of unpredictability and so many of those Muslim-dominated nations are economic basket cases. If I were to go to Saudi Arabia, I would be expected to accommodate myself completely to the Islamic laws which apply there, including not even being able to bring a Bible with me. But if a Muslim comes to a non-Muslim nation, he expects everyone else to accommodate to his religion, not vice versa. We need to get the attitude of accommodate or go back to your miserable homeland where you can pray as many times as you want—and you will need to.
Why should September 11th be different than any other day when it comes to kicking Muslims asses?
That’s just the kind of talk that will get you declaimed as a liberal hippy do gooder round these here parts. Stop being so reasonable!
