Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security

Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview

By RUSSELL GOLDMAN

Sept. 11, 2008—

On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.

In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.

The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.

When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

I think she whiffed on the Georgia question. Georgia in fact isn’t a NATO member so there would be no NATO-driven obligation for the US to respond.

SARAH PALIN ADVOCATES WAR WITH RUSSIA.

Just see how long it takes for that talking point to hit the airwaves. No later than 7 PM Eastern Time, you can bet.

Oh stop my heart - the liberals will go bananas! Just beautiful! Let em and Putin scowl! I like to say, to paraphrase Andrei Gromyko, "don't be fooled. This woman has a beautiful smile but iron teeth!"

You missed this part “Palin advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO, meaning that if attacked again in the future, the United States would be bound to go to war. “

No, she didn’t. It states that she pushes for the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO and responded to Gibson’s question in regards to what would happen if Russia pulled this with that.

They pulled this same BS on Reagan 28 year ago, yelling that if he gets elected there will be nuclear war. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.

The article says she advocates the accession of Georgia into NATO. Then there is an obligation to respond.

So she’s aware that it isn’t the case yet.

“No, she didn’t. It states that she pushes for the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO and responded to Gibson’s question in regards to what would happen if Russia pulled this with that.”

In context that makes some sense. I’ll just have to watch the whole thing for a clearer picture.

Not until you get into the article does it show that she was talking about Russia invading a NATO ally.

That cannot be repeated often enough:

When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Govenor Palin responded: "Perhaps so.

Be on the alert for statements comparing her to Barry Goldwater.

Uh, Russia is the warmonger.

Can you picture Obama or Biden speaking this clearly, and laying the gauntlet down to Russia? Never happen.

I didn’t think that it was possible to love this woman more—but Sarah has a way of surprising me.

She sounds like a female version of John Bolton.

And that’s a great thing.
