Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security
Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview
By RUSSELL GOLDMAN
Sept. 11, 2008
On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.
In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.
The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.
When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.
"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

She knows the Bush Doctrine...BUT if she subscribes to it....Obama can then say...SEE ANOTHER GEORGE W BUSH in the whitehouse...
Yes, that’s right, the ‘Bush Doctrine’ covers both the harboring of terrorists and the US’s being permitted to make preemptive strikes. Asking which element of the Doctrine is perfectly reasonable.
I think she did well. He was very condescending to her. i cant think of any network anchors who wouldnt have been, but it was palpable. She tried to nullify that by keeping on calling him “Charlie” and making good eye contact. camera angles were flattering.
She was a little thrown on having to define the Bush Doctrine, and did well to ask him in what respect (question was whether she agreed with it or not).
That was a curve ball question, too.
She was strong on national defense, strong on Israel taking actions to keep itself secure, strong on ukraine joining NATO, a little less strong on georgia.
She was great on self-confidence and ability to assume the office of VP and POTUS, did well explaining her “mission from god” church quote (quoting Lincoln always helps).
Very strong on defeating islamic terrorism.
On a scale of 1-10, I’d give her delivery of answers a 9.
Have at it.
and NO telepromters for obama!
You are correct.
but she also had to distance herself from Bush’s mistakes.
Disagree. She whiffed at the Bush Doctrine question. Didn't know what it was--exactly. She answered it like a politician, though . . . didn't let it stop her. But that's the only question that I thought Gibson "got her" with.
My snap grade was a C based on the Bush doctrine, and I thought she was a bit tentative with some other answers.
But it certainly wasn't the meltdown that I'm sure the Dems were hoping for. And, she'll get better, I'm sure.
I don’t know. I just saw it on Nightly News. I’m sure it’s on the net by now, though.
you have to be tentative on foreign policy! You don’t want to give away your hand.
Interview aired on Nightly News with Gibson at 6:30 est. It will be shown again on Nightline tonight. Tomorrow’s interview will be televised at 6:30 est. on Nightly News with Gibson and at length on 20/20 tomorrow evening.
I can't recall ever seeing that kind of camera shot before during an entire interview.
My wife mentioned the same thing. Usually, they will cut away to and fro using several different shots. Lets see if the rest of the interview is that way.
“When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Govenor Palin responded: “Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you’re going to be expected to be called upon and help.”
Thats the quote libs will pound away on. Not only will they say she`s a war monger itching for nuclear war with Russia, they will say she does`nt realize Georgia isn`t a member of NATO.
It is impossible that Obama will be elected President. Facts and reality will not allow it.
Cheer up.
They are using a profile shot because they don’t want her to look into the camera and dazzle the audience or possibly hurt her with the audience. I’m serious. This is a technique that the McCain campaign might have asked for or it could have been ABC insisting.
You know, Charlie’s demeanor really hit me. I’ve held exec positions in male dominated fields, and have run across a few arrogant pigs.
This one won’t fly!
LOL... that is excellent :)
