Sarah Palin Defends Experience, Takes Hard Line Approach on National Security

Republican VP Candidate Speaks with ABC News' Charlie Gibson in Exclusive Interview

By RUSSELL GOLDMAN

Sept. 11, 2008—

On the anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, Gov. Sarah Palin took a hard-line approach on national security and said that war with Russia may be necessary if that nation invades another country.

In her first of three interviews with ABC News's Charles Gibson and the only interview since being picked by Sen. John McCain as his Republican vice presidential nominee, Palin categorized the Russian invasion of Georgia as "unacceptable" and warned of the threats from Islamic terrorists and a nuclear Iran.

The Governor advocated the accession of Georgia and Ukraine into NATO.

When asked by Gibson if under the NATO treaty, the U.S. would have to go to war if Russia again invaded Georgia, Palin responded: "Perhaps so. I mean, that is the agreement when you are a NATO ally, is if another country is attacked, you're going to be expected to be called upon and help.

"And we've got to keep an eye on Russia. For Russia to have exerted such pressure in terms of invading a smaller democratic country, unprovoked, is unacceptable," she told ABC News' Charles Gibson in an exclusive interview.

You are so spot on, young conservative. I want a VP and potential POTUS who can handle the Putin’s, I’manutjobs, etc. Charlie Gibson is a lightweight. She will have tougher interviews and challenges that she will meet. She is doing very well. Charlie is just doing his job.

Just ONCE I’d like her to respond with : “Were these concerns paramount whenBill Clinton, also a Gov., was running for PRESIDENT ( NOT VP )....how many heads of state did HE meet? And wht didn’t anyone care??????”.....

I don’t care if she gets “unfair questions”. She has to be able to handle them and she CAN DO IT.

B+

I would have only given her a B-
but Charlie’s “all right young lady what have you got to say for yourself” demeanor is worth 2 notches up.

Haven’t seen it yet but would appear that of the two, Charlie was the one who made the gaffe in the interview so far by misquoting her. LOL

And here the liberal journalists thought they were superior to her?

she did good.
she came off strong and resolved and veryyyyy cool and calm
she got a bit rattled when he was asking that stupid question three times about going terrorist hunting in Pakistan....but held it together.

the last segment was excellent...she nailed it.

Whoa. She just hit one out of the park in answering a question about a comment she made about Iraq being a”task from GOD”. Don’t want to spoil for those who haven’t seen it. It was awesome.

WTF?!

What a way to end the newscast and interview ... Sarah in mid sentence.

I thought she did fine.

However, the structure of the questions and the manner in which they were posed made it very difficult for ANYONE to come away smelling like a rose.

She was repeatedly asked if she was ready to be VP or CIC as if it's absurd to think she really is.

Gibson then posed several "no-win" questions, such as do you sacrifice your own country's security rather than invade Pakistan without their permission, or do you allow Israel to take out Iranian nuke sites?

Say "no" and you're weak and lax on security; say "yes" and your both a warmonger and someone who doesn't care about other country's borders.

When Charlie asked if she supports the "Bush Doctrine", she correctly asked in what respect. Unfortunately, she got a bit of the "deer in the headlights" look when he simply repeated the question. Obama would NEVER get these questions.

But again...I think she did fine.

I think she was great! She is honest and doesn’t have to think about what she “should” say. This is one strong woman with strong values and beliefs. She is not afraid to tell us what she thinks and she WILL NOT BACK DOWN.

SO FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY SEEN THE INTERVIEW, WHAT IS YOUR ABSOLUTE HONEST OPINION OF HOW SHE DID??

Steady, strait forward, and not an ounce of intimidation.

She was perfect in form.

she needs to be able to handle this. You show your strength after you were tested again and again. Tested on dailykos crap, tested on speech delivery and now tested on answering gotcha questions off the cuff.

And once people realize that Sarah passed all the tests, they will conclude she is truly ready and McCain was wise for picking her

“Charlie is hammering her on the experience angle. I don’t like this guy.”

Ditto. The toughest test Obama has faced is that reacharound by O’really. The big O needs an inquisition from the likes of Malkin or another serious conservative to equal this nonsense.

Fat chance.....i know.

Gibson then posed several "no-win" questions,

Well, that's life in the big city, sometimes your only choices are "the bad choice" and "the even worse choice."

Say “no” and you’re weak and lax on security; say “yes” and your both a warmonger and someone who doesn’t care about other country’s borders.

That was the trap. A novice would have answered either yes or no. She passed.
