Harper majority would be 'devastating' Published Thursday September 11th, 2008 A7 By TARA BRAUTIGAM The Canadian Press
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Premier Danny Williams levelled his most blistering attack yet against the prime minister, telling a business audience Wednesday that a Stephen Harper-led majority government would mark one of the darkest eras in Canadian history.
Williams escalated his public feud with Harper in the nascent stages of the federal election campaign, warning voters that the Tories would stoop to any depths to implement their hidden "right-wing, Conservative-Reform party" agenda.
"The only reason we haven't seen his full plan for Canada implemented is because he had a minority government to keep him in check," Williams said in an address to the St. John's Board of Trade.
"I can only say this, and I say it with all sincerity and genuine concern for our great country: a majority government for Stephen Harper would be one of the most negative political events in Canadian history."
Williams has crossed swords with Harper for two years over the equalization program. But on Wednesday the Conservative premier - he emphasizes he is of a different Tory breed than the federal Conservatives - unleashed a torrent of new criticism against Harper, who he called a "fraud."
"This is a federal government willing not only to break their own promises, but they go so far as to break their own laws and call an election even though they mandated fixed election dates," Williams said in a speech televised nationally.
"There is nothing Harper will not do in order to win a majority government. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a party who purportedly offered a terminally ill MP a life insurance policy to get his vote," he continued, referring to the so-called Chuck Cadman affair.
"How low can you go?"
The federal Conservative party has been accused of offering a $1-million life insurance policy to late independent MP Chuck Cadman for his support in a critical 2005 confidence vote against the Liberal government of former prime minister Paul Martin.
Canada Ping!
I would love for a Conservative government to gain majority in Canada. The only downside would be that all the liberals who moved to Canada after Bush was elected would probably move back just on principle.
They could always move to France....oh wait, Sarkozy. Or they could move to Germany...oh wait, Merkel. Well there’s always Cuba or Venezuela.
“LOL! the liberals are terrified to our north, as well as here at home!”
may i join you?
bwhahahahahahha, bwahaa, bwaaaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha!!!!!
(but, alas, i hope our mirth is not shorlived.)
The premier of Newfoundland is worried a majority Tory gov’t in Ottawa might turn off the spighot of tax payer money to the maritime provinces.
The displaced liberals could always move to Great Britan at least for a few months. Then they would have to go to Australia, for a while. It must be hard changing countries each time your party doesn’t win an election. Which is probably why all the overwrought, weepy liberals who threaten to leave, never do. Tis a shame.
Good place for libs. Spain had a rightist government until the train bombings of 3/11. Then they went all soft and folded up with an appeasing leftist regime.
I went to university in New Brunswick. You're right. Hard to find a true conservative there because of possible loss of federal aid.
Such a waste. If Ireland can succeed they way the have, the Maritimes could, too.
not if mccain wins. and if we have 3 for 3 (David Cameron in UK), the liberals would have to learn a new language.
The pain in Spain is mainly due to Palin!
Best reason of all would be heading Susan Sarandon off at the pass with her threat to move to Canada as one possibility if Obama loses.
I can't help but wonder how much the premium is on a million dollar life insurance policy for someone who is certified terminally ill.
Williams need to get his head out of his ass and go fishing.
There is little conservative about Harper and the CPC other than foreign policy and the military.
Conservatives have been shut out of the CPC at both the membership grassroots level and it is the backbenches for any MP who do not toe the red tory line.
If you know about what is happening in Canada with the assault on free speech by the CHRC under Harper and still support him you will get what you deserve should he ever get a majority.
Harper and the CPC has outspent the Liberals.
The CPC is the most pro-abortion party in Canada according to their own party policy.
Yep all the other major parties are even farther left but the CPC is not conservative, sorry burst your bubble!
A good analogy is the open borders mess in the US supported by Bush and McCain.
This accusation, which is all it is, is just another desperate witch hunt courtesy of the scared liberals.
I agree ... the CPC is not acting like a conservative party. Having said that though, they ARE the best option we have. If the libs get back in power, Canada is toast.
