"There's no doubt she's been a phenomenon," Mr Obama said of Mrs Palin, the Republican candidate for vice-president.
He joked that he spoke "as someone that used to be on the cover of Time and Newsweek" magazines but had recently to make do with an offer from Popular Mechanics due to media focus on Mrs Palin.
In an appearance on the David Letterman television chatshow, Mr Obama admitted that contrary to the immediate judgment of many analysts, Mrs Palin had been a boon for Mr McCain's campaign, conceding: "there's no doubt that she's energised the base."
However he insisted that her appointment signalled that Republicans had recognised that his own campaign theme of "change" had resonated with the public.
"Ultimately what we've seen over the last week is a concession on the part of the McCain campaign that this election is going to be about change," he said.
"If you don't recall, for the last two years we've been talking about needing to change how Washington works, how the country is managed."

"There's no doubt she's been IS a phenomenon,"
There - fixed.
Lipstick envy is not appealing
Thanks for posting this article.
“If you don’t recall, for the last two years we’ve been talking about needing to change how Washington works, how the country is managed.”
Yes, he’s been ‘talking’ about ‘needing’ to ‘change’ how Washington works, how the country is managed, but when and where has he shown the ability to do so, or had any accomplishments he could put forth?
He could have VOTED “YES” or “NO” on the issues that came before him in the Senate, and made a difference. Instead he chose to vote “PRESENT” (i.e. not vote) a majority of the time.
Obama is someone who TALKS about change, but won’t even put forth the effort to VOTE for change.
Ironic that he is asking his constituents to put forth the effort voluntarily, that he is getting paid to do, and won’t.
“Ultimately what we’ve seen over the last week is a concession on the part of the McCain campaign that this election is going to be about change,” he said.
Obama talking about change? Next you will tell me John Kerry was in Viet Nam.
I was thinking the same thing except there are 3 parties involved in this case: Obama, Palin, and the public, and he is upset about the public's shifting affinity from him to her. So although the word is usually misused, jealous can be used here.
And he picked a running mate that has been in D.C. since the Nixon administration, for goodness sakes...How is THAT “change” ???
Well, you just lost the Popular Mechanics vote, you slob.
An Obama Sexist Pig that comes from a long line of Obama Sexist Pigs...His Daddy was a sexist pig, and so was his pologamist Grandpappy
Obama had an amen corner in David Letterman, who was in total agreement with everything he said.
"Barack Obama: I'm jealous of Sarah Palin's new-found fame"
...he insisted that her appointment signalled that Republicans had recognised that his own campaign theme of "change" had resonated with the public. ... "Ultimately what we've seen over the last week is a concession on the part of the McCain campaign that this election is going to be about change," he said.
That graphic is hilarious!
And now that your opponent's running mate is "different", you can't handle the attention she is getting -- because you think you deserved it.
He had his turn.
You said: “Well, you just lost the Popular Mechanics vote, you slob.”
My response: This man just can’t stop mocking normal people.
