Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has received a hero's welcome on her first return to Alaska following her nomination.
The state's governor was greeted by cheers at her first solo rally as John McCain's running mate in the race for the White House.
She addressed an enthusiastic group of supporters at a Fairbanks airport hangar, who were chanting "USA! USA!" and waving placards.
Mrs Palin said: "It's been an amazing couple of weeks. The response has been overwhelming."
She was due to attend a deployment ceremony for the Army unit of her 19-year-old son, Track, who is shipping out to Iraq.
She was also preparing for her first major television network interview since being named as Mr McCain's running mate.
