Democrats Need to Shake The 'Elitist' Tag (WSJ op-ed)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | September 11, 2008 | LYNN FORESTER DE ROTHSCHILD

Posted on 09/11/2008 8:41:43 AM PDT by CedarDave

If Barack Obama loses the presidential election, it may well be the result of a public perception that he is detached and elitist -- a politician whose expressions of empathy for hard-working Americans stem more from abstract solidarity than a real connection to the lives of millions of citizens.

Suggestions that Sen. Obama has failed to relate to working- and middle-class voters in swing states have dogged his campaign for months. His choice of Sen. Joseph Biden as his running mate only marginally corrects the problem.

~~snip~~

The "new politics" Democrats have found their new, improved Stevenson in Mr. Obama. In spite of his lofty liberal rhetoric, Mr. Obama is not connecting to millions of middle- and working-class voters, as well as women voters of all classes. Not only is his legislative record scant on issues that make a difference in their lives, but his current campaign is based mainly on an assumption of his transcendence.

Despite Mr. Obama's assertions that his campaign is about "you," much of his campaign is, in fact, all about him. In the months since the primaries ended, his creation and display of a mock presidential seal with his name on it, his speech at a mass rally at the Prussian Victory Column in Berlin, and his insistence on delivering his acceptance speech in front of fabricated Greek columns in a stadium holding 80,000 chanting supporters have crossed the thin line that separates galvanizing voters and plain old demagoguery.

~~snip~~

Mr. Obama cannot point to any analogue to Mr. McCain's service. As he talks of himself, and his supporters talk about the amazing Obamaness of Obama, it is no wonder that millions of Americans, including loyal Democrats, still question whether his presidency would reinforce the splendor of Barack Obama rather than protect them and enhance their lives.

Excellent article from a lib supporter (a longtime Democrat who worked for Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan and supported Sen. Hillary Clinton) about why Obama is having problems with REAL Americans.

Thanks for the article. Democrats only want two things. A large government and control of it. That makes them elitists. By their very nature they are elitists. Until they renounce big government they will continue to be elitists.

It gets better; from the bottom of the article:

Ms. Forester de Rothschild, an attorney, is CEO of EL Rothschild, LLC, a private investment company.

They can’t. They think they’re so much smarter and better than common folk.

It’s no coincidence there’s been a class movement away from the Democrats into the GOP since LBJ, Humphrey, and especially McGovern. I’m part of that, as were my parents and my childhood friends. We had humble, union, middle class lives but we started to see thru the elitist policies, hypocrisy and condescension as the Democrats were co-opted by the left wing. God, family, America still matters as much to us today as it did in the 1950’s and 60’s and the leftists don’t get it and never will.

It's amazing the things they come up with while dining on caviar and arugula.

I suppose we common folk could just inflate our dinner plates for added savings on the fuel charge increased prices on food!

Drill Nancy's head, it's not oil, but maybe we could make a methane processor like Thunderdome!

I remember when that fool Kerry and Thereza stopped at a Wendy’s in upstate NY and Thereza didn’t know what Chili was. They didn’t eat anything and sent out for shrimp or crab sandwiches from a local yacht club on the Hudson.

And they wonder why they have the rap of being elitist!

Obama’s entrance on the national stage was pure Hollywood and will soon end. He has no second act. He is proving, with his daily babble, that he has no respect for America, for women, for the unborn, for the working class, true Christians and BO cannot accept anyone who does not hold His Husseinness in great reverence.

A self-made moron indeed!

“Elitist” is not a tag, it's an attitude like arrogance. It's not something you can “shake.” Elitism comes out of you every time you speak. Elitism shows in your actions. Elitism shows in your life choices. As the saying goes “if the shoe fits.”

Our town had a Labor Day picnic for union members. The local TV stations covered it.

There were hundreds of people attending. Most of them would certainly be called “rednecks” buy the Liberal Elites.

I noticed ALL them had Obama buttons on. It’s a shame.

Laura Ingraham just had a clip from John McCain’s remarks at the United 93 crash site. Very presidential and Sarah with her remarks last night, she has great praise for him. Neither of them are elitists in my book, unlike Obama and Biden. I must confess, I’m warming up to McCain and support him though I have disagreement with some of his policies.

I think Todd Palin needs to get out on the stump in union towns and talk about himself and Sarah and how they make decisions based on family and country.

I knew Lynn Forester slightly when she was a junior associate at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett (Cy Vance's law firm) - a nice but exceptionally ambitious girl from a middle class New Jersey family. She was married first to rich boy Andrew Stein, a power in New York Democratic politics, for several years. She is very bright, nobody's fool, and a dyed-in-the-wool liberal Democrat. I think she is quite close to Hillary, and I know she is very much a part of the upper echelons of New York Jewish Society (think "Our Crowd")- at the level that mingles freely with WASP Society (think the "400").

That Lynn is writing this is little short of astonishing - she didn't write this without it having been vetted in her circles, and what it means is that somebodies in the Democratic Establishment really know they have a deep problem.

IMHO he’s an America hating terrorist sympathizer.

Enough of a reason to vote for John McCain.
