Barack Obama spoke on Wednesday night about a subject that often gets short shrift on the 2008 campaign trail: immigration. The Democratic candidate made the speech to a crowd of Hispanic leaders at black-tie dinner capping the end of a Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute gathering in Washington.
After spending a few minutes talking about his opponent and his other policy proposals, Obama got his loudest cheers with these lines: This election is about the 12 million people living in the shadows, the communities taking immigration enforcement into their own hand. They are counting on us to stop the hateful rhetoric filling our airwaves, and rise above the fear, and rise above the demagoguery, and finally enact comprehensive immigration reform.
Obama complimented John McCain for championing the comprehensive immigration package that died in the Senate last year and that helped (temporarily) sink his primary campaign. The bill, which would have created a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, inflamed widespread anti-immigration sentiment. Congress was deluged with calls, emails and faxes expressing opposition.
Since then, most politicians have kept the issue out of the spotlight. McCain has even made a pledge to tackle border security before any other changes a reversal Obama made sure to point out Wednesday.
Well, I dont know about you, but I think its time for a president who wont walk away from comprehensive immigration reform when it becomes politically unpopular, he said.
Obama makes frequent mention of his healthcare and energy proposals on the stump, and his aides have said those will be the top priorities in the first year of his administration. A deal on immigration could still be elusive even with bigger Democratic majorities in Congress, given the success of Republican opponents who stopped two previous attempts to get the bill

Gee. Why would a floodgate of cheap, non-union, non-minimum wage unskilled and semi-skilled workers who don’t speak English be politically unpopular? Let’s let ‘em vote on their own behalfs, rather than for all those dead people still on the roles. That’ll make them “politically popular,” whether we like it or not. Tell our kids they’d better learn Spanish if they want to fit in in el Estados Unidos.
I want the 12 million people living in the shadows EXTRACTED and sent home so that we will no longer be a country that has 12 million people (30 Million) living in the shadows.
This is about the polls and fund raising. They are desperate to remind the GOP base that McCain is hated on immigration.
Sorry, Obama, you’re going down and you’re not going to win via vote suppression.
I don’t think you agree with him at all. He wants to take that power away from the communities *cough*asdoesMcCain*cough*.

He’s doing this just now?
"Politically unpopular". Is that the same as Americans don't want it?

fear not!!
bambi is just putting lipstick on a pig.
“If McCain can paint Obama as Mr. Amnesty, and convice the conservative base (the most skeptical) that he is really for “enforcement first” then this could be a 40+ state landslide.”
Wilely McCain has allowed Obama to run his mouth first, get this taped and probably filmed etc.
And then if McCain does as you say, he can claim in true Maverick form to haved “changed” his mind. He can portray Obama as the open borders advocate; himself the enforcement first candidate.
Oh, sure many here will be justifiably cynical. But he will be in the superior political position, election wise.
By staying mute thus far, McCain is a chess player; Obama a checkers player. Let the other guy show his hand first.
All he's saying is "Screw you AMERICAN citizens! I don't care what YOU want. As President, I'll do what the hell I want to further my power. The AMERICAN peoples wishes come second to my marxist ideas!"

Actually, Your Oneness, its now 11 million. Republican policies to enforce US laws have already caused nearly 10% of these criminals to leave. Another few years of law enforcement will result in a minimum problem. This is a non-issue when our laws are enforced.
Exactly. Thats his pattern...its all about Obama.
Nor around Phlidelphia. They drive around in their cars with Mexican flags.
Obama, pandering to another special interest group. Forget the people (who are what he terms politically unpopular).
