A week ago I saw this Letter to the Editor in the Wall Street Journal

Under 45, lover of the outdoors, a Republican reformer who has taken on the Republican Party establishment, has many children, and a spot on the national ticket as vice president with less than two years in the governor's office -- you describe Teddy Roosevelt in 1900 and Sarah Palin in 2008.

No, he was not, and other than social conservatism, which I think to be a flawed term,(in fact all labels are flawed) Palin is not either although she could become one.

She is what McCain is, and both are conservative leaning populists.

I was a co-researcher on some distantly-related family members. One of the couples killed in the Oklahoma City bombing, the husband was the son of a member of a famous missionary family and spent much of his childhood in Africa with his missionary parents.

Anyway, I bought this obscure book (you can read exerpts in google books), called "Christian Missionizing and Social Transformation - A history of Conflict and Change in Eastern Zaire" by Jack E. Nelson.

In the book, Teddy Roosevelt went to Africa and visited the missionaries once or twice and laid the cornerstone for one of the first schools. The missionaries aided Roosevelt and his son? to go big game hunting, and Roosevelt opened up the way for the missionaries to work in what was then the Belgian Congo. So there's another similarity with Sarah & family :-)

I agree with Cold Heat. Here is some of Teddy Roosevelt’s Progressive Party platform:

The platform called for women’s suffrage, recall of judicial decisions, easier amendment of the U.S. Constitution, social welfare legislation for women and children, workers’ compensation, limited injunctions in strikes, farm relief, revision of banking to assure an elastic currency, required health insurance in industry, new inheritance taxes and income taxes, improvement of inland waterways, and limitation of naval armaments.

The sad thing is, that we are trading our Repub/conservative politics in for a populist ticket, largely because the electorate has bought into the populist visions of the perfect government. Rather than trim it down and rely more on the individual, big brother has become dominant and is alive and kicking this silly season.

It is what it is....and the alternative is almost too much for me to contemplate.

I have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I really don't have the luxury of choice this time.
