BENTONVILLE, Ark., September 10, 2008 – Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer and a leading private employer of Hispanics, will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, September 1 – October 15, by providing its customers and the Hispanic community with valuable information and resources for the pursuit of higher education. Wal-Mart’s commitment to supporting education initiatives will be featured in a national campaign that will coincide with the launch of a Spanish-language website, AhorraMasViveMejor.com, aimed at facilitating and empowering moms and kids to access information on higher education and school funding.

Corporations celebrate all the good pandering for money months.

And many places have some sort of psuedo-octoberfest that happens during German Heritage Month. Including down here in Tucson. It’s all about who sees the month as an opportunity to make money. I guarantee See’s Candy celebrates Chocolate Lovers Month.

Wal*Mart, your founder, Mr. Sam Walton, is rolling over in his grave. He built Wal*Mart to promote American goods, and now you are having HISPANIC MONTH (of 1 1/2 months). Sorry, but you should go back to the roots that Sam had -- PROMOTING American jobs!!!

When will White HERITAGE month be?

If you saw the number of Mexican license plates (those would be LEGAL crossers BTW) in the WalMart and mall parking lots of the Southwest on weekends you’d understand why the celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. They want the money, and yes they’ll pander for it. That’s called retail.

Yea, I can't really understand the people that want to blame Walmart or any other big, evil corporation for everything.

Walmart's crime here is knowing their customer base well enough to realize that they have a huge number of Hispanic customers.

Other than the notable exception of when some managers in Walmart were using a cheap cleaning contractor that knew hired illegal immigrants, Walmart has done a reasonable job of working to not employ illegal immigrants.

They don't make out immigration laws and they don't enforce them. They do have to do business in the system that others have created, and their greatest asset has always been researching their customers and what they want.

At least Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos, etc.. have a base culture that is European and Spanish. They are Christians. They work hard and focus all on family. To most of them family and church are important. If we must have Black History Month, why not Latino Month? September 16th is Mexican Independence Day. I am waiting for American Indian Month, Asian American Month, and Euro-American Month. I think it will be a long wait.

First you have Inquisition Day where they celebrate Spanish Jews being tortured. No? Don’t like that one? Okay, then you can have Conquistador Day where they go the New World and exterminate the Incas. No?
Okay, how about the girls on Telemundo?

Okay, I think "Girls of Telemundo Month" is something any red-blooded American man can get behind.

Exactly what do they celebrate?

They celebrate that Hispanics buy a lot of good in their stores.

They have a huge Hispanic customer base and they know it. Marketing efforts aimed at Hispanics are just a sensible business practice.

Walmart makes more money than any other retailer by being more efficient than any other retailer. They offer competitive wages and benefits for employees. They offer good prices and then make money by selling high volumes with low margins.

They also have stores in Mexico as well. If there weren't illegal aliens driving down wages, they would have to pay more for employees, but so would their competition. It doesn't change their business model at all.

If a large portion of their customer base was French, and there was a French heritage month, they'd be celebrating French Heritage Month.

The only thing Walmart really opposes politically are things that would harm their efficiency because being more efficient is what sets them apart. Other than that, they adjust to what the market dictates.

Actually, if you go to the Andes, the Incas are still there and their descendants form a MAJORITY of the local population.

If you go to New England today, THERE you will see that the original Indian inhabitants were almost totally exterminated.

I challenge you to do with Hispanic labor in this country!!! I also challenge to find a more family oriented people, more christian and hard working. I'm an Italian, we were once the hated immigrants of this great country and today we are a strong part of it.

And really what is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. Probably putting up cheap fake Mexican decorations and putting the salsa on sale. Woohoo.

Most Mexicans in the US are largely of American Indian ancestry. Many Guatemalans are 100% Indian.

Mexico, all Central American countries outside of Costa Rica and Belize, to say nothing of Peru, Bolivia, Paraguay, are either heavily indigenous or mestizo (mixed). Being that you are in Mass, most of the Dominicans and Puerto Ricans you encounter are mulatto (ie like Barack Obama) not Spanish/European.

Most Hispanics in the US are only partially descended from the Spaniards, in the same way that Jesse Jackson is of Scottish descent if you catch my drift.

Corona might be $1 off per 12-pack. Look out, the Republic will fall as a result.

I went into a WM on the central CA coast and it was about 99% hispanic customers.

As a Wal-Mart cashier, I have seen our Chinese, German and African customers come through the line --- they have learned English. We have to find interpreters for the customers who speak only Spanish. My Sesame Street Spanish just doesn't cover everything.

However, I have lots of fun with the customers. I asked the little kids, "Why do you get to speak two languages and I only get one?" To my bi-lingual co-workers, I explain, "No wonder I can't speak Spanish. You guys talk faster than I think!" and "They don't talk that fast on Sesame Street!"

Then there are the lively discussion between couples, it doesn't matter whether it is in English, German, Chinese, Spanish or Samoli, the discussion is still the same: "Why are you buying that? We don't need that. It cost too much, etc."

I love "feeding the hungry."
