McCain camp screwing up by reponding to Pig comment (vanity)
Me

Posted on 09/10/2008 8:10:53 AM PDT by Scythian

I believe is a major mistake by the McCain camp. They could have let the 'Pig' comment go and been endeared even further. But now, they are taking on the victim status and seem small and petty, and as if they are using this as a way to avoid talking about issues. This response is going to cause Obama to take back the lead again in the polls.

I totally agree with you. If there’s one thing conservatives can’t stand is contrived victimhood. We get it all the time from the Left, and it doesn’t sound any better from the Republicans.

You are right. Also, most people don’t pay close attention to this stuff. All many are going to hear is, “Did you hear Obama called Palin a pig?” This dog will hunt for a little longer.

It;s the same thing that the Messiah has been doing for the last two years. It's politics, and when you can make it a media issue, it gets attention.

Had the Messiah used the same words before, it would not have been possible to respond, but it's a new term in a new dynamic, so it justifiably gets attention.

This is viral. It is viral marketing. The McCain team will make sure it gets a day or two of media.

IT’S ABOUT MONEY. If they can depress the Obama donors NOW, not in 6 weeks, they have to spend all their time fundraising and none campaigning. The McCain knows it. They will grab everything they can pre debates to depress donations to Obama.

He didn’t take Federal money and his oxygen supply is shutting down. There are behind the scenes effects unfolding. Salaries have to be paid. Ads won’t get bought. GOTV expenditures won’t happen.

This is superb McCain campaign tactics. It’s TACTICS, not strategy. Obama has to have money now, and if they can suppress the influx, that campaign won’t be able to pay for phone banks.

On the contrary, I think it’s Obama who should have let it go, just acknowledging and fighting such a trivial issue shows how thin-skinned and “nuanced” he is. Presidents know when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em, and McCain is pushing this just to show how BHO can’t admit he’s ever been wrong.

Depends on how you handle it. Keeping it alive reminds the people that your opponent is rude and lack substantive points against you. So long as you keep it alive without getting whiny.

Barack Obama is mad about something stupid that came out of his own mouth.

He could have simply said he did not want Governor Palin to think he was being personally insulting. "I'm sorry if my words were taken as a personal affront."

I would have suggested a limited response. The YouTube quick-response was good, although I would have put dates on the joke by Palin and the joke by Obama, to show how they were related.

But, I don't think the McCain campaign should have said anything else. The blogosphere was all over it right away, and it would have probably bubbled up into the MSM on its own, especially after the quick response on YouTube.

That being said, I think that Obama is handling this badly. He could have apologized for any offense, then made exactly the same points about getting back to the issues. His petulant attitude is probably going to backfire on him.

This is not a conservative campaign. It is a Populist campaign. Different rules.............

For some of us, this is not fun, and for others it's a hoot.

Whatever floats their boats, as they say..........

Once was ok.

Obama should have known better, as the crowd clearly took it as an insult against Palin.

It’s just more bad judgment from Obama.

Let him brew in his own stew now on it.

McCain can move on.

This is my problem with the comment. I've posted this before, and I'll probably post it again, but it has less to do with the single event -- and more to do with this pattern of misogyny and the Eddie Haskell like attempts to 'blow it off'.

There was calling the woman reporter, 'sweetie' (or something like that).
Flipping off Mrs. Clinton in a debate.
This analogy/reference to Mrs. Palin and pigs/fish.

And in all cases the sly, comeback: 'oh no, not me -- you are reading too much into my remarks'...

If just one, or two - sure, maybe they were accidents. At this point, though -- it seems like a pattern.
I think Mr. Obama would make a good case study for a psychologist...

Yesterday afternoon when I saw this on Freerepublic, there was a thread with over 500 posts. I thought it was ridiculous that people were jumping all over this. Listen to his comments in context. [rzn]

You would mean to tell us that had he instead said: "A new saddle on an old mare pretending to be a maverick is still an old mare" would in no way be an "age-ism" comment geared directly at his opponent?..but would simply be a common phrase about "old mares" and would only be a poorly chosen policy metaphor but would not be an intentional statement about his opponent's age or even directly his opponent personally?

...if you fall victim to it you do look small and petty.

You know. At some point, we need to stand up & speak our mind on these issues without falling overboard into the liberal "PC" mentality.

For example, when Jay Leno & his fellow late night talk-show hosts continually lambast some political candidates ONLY because of their age, I think it's worth standing up and simply say, that's failing to honor our elders. In the New Testament, "elder" is a term of honor, not derision. In late-night talk show culture, age alone = open pot shots.

So, while I don't think we need to go overboard like liberals and make everything an "ism" cause like they do, I think it's fair game to point out statements that honor others and statements that dishonor others.

I’d love to see her, just before she begins a speech, say, “Excuse me for a moment. I’ve got to put on some lipstick.” That would be a riot.

I agree. Let the blogosphere carry the water (and the MSM, when they deem appropriate). Stay above it. UNLESS, it is sooo inflammatory (Trig’s DNA, attacks on a Down Syndrome child). If it’s a direct broadside on the candidates themselves, leave it to others. If it’s a personal attack on your family, all’s fair...

McCain’s team hits hard, pulls back, and moves on to the next point. Barry is playing defense today and that’s good. This isn’t going to become the major theme of the campaign.

Call this sexist, but it’s a reality of life. Real men don’t let other men verbally abuse women you care about. If McCain doesn’t respond to direct Palin smears from Barry, women are going to think McCain does not back her. Men are going to wonder what kind of man McCain is.

Sarah can laugh off the insults. McCain can not. That’s just how life is.

McCain camp screwing up by reponding to Pig comment (vanity)

Nope. They are not playing the victem card. They pointed it out and have moved on. I think they should have more fun with it. Sarah should have stepped up to the mic, pulled out some lipstick, put it on and went on with her speech.

Obama looked like an ass for saying it and he looked like even more of ass defending it.

I disagree with the idea that every passing thought that can’t even fill a paragraph deserves a vanity thread. Stop it!
